It seems that 11:00pm is when the fairy godmother magically appears and turns off the throttling. Tomorrow I will see if I can track down when they turn it on.

I've just retested and all the files now download in the 120-220kbyte range so yes, it appears either Orcons aggressive traffic shaper is disabled after 11pm or the promised increase in intl bandwidth has arrived.

It looks like they are doing something. Intl is up and down like a yoyo again.

Just a FYI, Orcon's official acknowledgement for this specific issue has been exactly one month now.
Although it has been happening a tad longer than that.

redkea: Orcon are blocking .mp4 (say goodbye to itunes podcasts), .flv (say goodbye to youtube), and .avi (say goodbye to bittorrent)

Ad to that list online radio and NASA TV both over the past few days have been the pits , buffereing all the time. The online radio feed uses stuff all bandwidth and up till Tuesday always worked well just as NASA TV did. Checked both here at work on Xtra and both work great..

I have noticed that the video podcasts have been the pits over the past few weeks..

For a company like Orcon to promote their llu plans with expensive advertising handouts such as i recieved in person from a man knocking at my front door, that stated particularly that they would concentrate on service to a smaller clientelle rather than go after bulk customers is apparently the complete opposite of what they have done.
For a proffesional company to state that they didn't anticipate an increase in bandwidth need to facilitate the uptake of their new "faster" broadband is negligent bordering on ridiculous. I currently have a gold plan costing over $100 a month and this is by far the worst internet i've ever had.
If it doesn't magically change by tommorow ( and i suspect it won't - after all, how can a multi-million dollar company be expected to know when their extra bandwidth is arriving...) i'll be cancelling my account with Orcon for good.

Agreed, I'm glad they finally admitted their failing. But now they should at least give us cheap/free internet until the problem is fixed. This is stupid that we continue to pay so much for such a sub-par connection.

I'm paying $140/month for throttled/shaped/filtered/fiddled-with P2P & sub-par international download speeds....and to top it off, my LLU phoneline cut my mum off twice when she tried calling me last night! It's a shame because I was going to convince them to switch over as well :(

I really fear the worsrt when I read Orcon just unbundled 5 more exchanges with theire current lack of bandwidth I'm expecting even more contention and slower speeds...*sigh*

So you are still experiencing the same slow international speeds even with being hooked up to their unbundled exchange?

The good thing is the new plans don't have a contract so there's nothing stopping us moving our business elsewhere. That was the biggest drawcard for me when I moved to Orcon. I am still happy with them, but if I wasn't I would be able to move with no hassles. If you are unhappy, I suggest you do the same.

Yea I agree with you too, I pay $110 for dial up (with some downloads) seems like a expensive deal to me, and since this has been going on for over 4 weeks now I would be nice to see some discounts or something...

But im locked in with a year long contract so I can't just move off to somewhere else :(

I'm not sure I'd really expect a discount, but you could argue the early termination fee I reckon. If they aren't supplying what they promised, I can't see how they could punish you for leaving to get "better" service elsewhere. I'm sure they'd try but if I were you I wouldn't give up until they let you out of the contract (if that's really what you want). I can accept an issue that lasts up to a month, but anything more than that is unacceptable. The biggest problem is that you move to a new ISP with no problems, and then next month you find that they're the ones with the bandwidth problem, meanwhile Orcon has sorted itself out (for the meanwhile anyway!).

Yep same. If Slingshot were smart, they'd double their efforts to get the new plans out ASAP before Orcon sorts their shizzle out. Doing that, I think we'd see a mass-exodus from Orcon to Slingshot.

Hi all,

Apologies for the delay in the update, we have been working extremely hard to get this upgrade in and working as fast as possible. The good news is that the bandwidth upgrade is scheduled to happen tonight. There will be a period of a couple of minutes when everything slows down as we take one of our upstram providers offline in order to add in the additional bandwidth. After this there should be a noticable improvement in speeds.

Thomas is going to post once the upgrade has been successfully caried out.

I also want to take this oppourtunity to explain how this situation has come about. The way that people are using the internet in New Zealand is fundamentally changing. We have noticed a massive increase in the amount of streaming traffic as a proportion of our total traffic over the last 6 months. On the existing customer base we have seen a 20% increase in the average users total usage in the last 3 months - I am sure you will agree that this is a significant increase in a short period. In additon those users we have signed up on our new unbundled service are using on average more than 60% more data than those on our products based on Telecom wholesale services.

While it was obvious that these new users would use more given the higher speeds they have and the lower costs of data we had not predicted such a radical change in usage behaviour. In hindsight our predictions were conservative.

In sum, we made mistakes in our modelling which when combined with the rapid increase in bandwidth usage by our our existing users created this problem. This has been compounded by the hardware failure that we had that was causing the speed problems that originally started this thread. We have fixed the hardware fault, are now adding bandwidth to fis this short term, and also revising our modelling (and looking at some creative solutions) to ensure that we don't run into this problem again medium to long term.

I would also like to re-iterate that we are not 'blocking' traffic at all. I know that it seems like I am arguing semantics, but I think there is an important distinction to be made between blocking traffic and managing traffic. Managing traffic has meant that while our bandwidth has been restricted by and large gaming/web/latency-senstive applications have remained usable (while other applications have been slowed). The "magic fairy godmother turning off throttling at 11pm" is in fact many of our users going to bed, meaning that overall bandwidth requirements for latency sensitive traffic decrease, and peer to peer and other traffic that was being managed can once again be freed up to consume more bandwidth.

I am happy to answer any more questions on this topic that you might have.
