To be honest I thought I needed e-sim on my watch but in the end it isn't a necessity for me

Everyone is different but considering 99% of the time we have our phones with us I don't think it's the end of the world. Nice to have, yes, a must? No... Not yet I don't think.

You're obviously not a runner. I run some quite long distances and I love the piece of mind that I get from knowing that I can call for help if I have a fall or some other type of accident. It's the main reason why I use an Apple Watch instead of the Garmin Forerunners that are more commonly used by runners.

I'm not sure why Samsung watch users need it though. I do several marathon events every year and have never seen any runners wearing a Samsung watch.

As a mountain biker who doesn't like the idea of crashing and demolishing a $2k iPhone, the eSIM for my watch was an absolute game changer.

I also used it while paddleboarding yesterday, so there's that too.

Yeah, I do open water swimming and usually have my phone in my tow float, but it's good to know that I can leave it on shore and still have emergency connectivity.

A colleague of mine thought the same thing. Unfortunately, he drowned in the open sea before he could be found with his severe calf cramps.

I'm not saying there is no use cases for wearbles with e-sims but most users don't need it. Yes runners and open sea swimmers need them but the majority don't. I'm not against either side, just trying to understand 2Degrees' thinking and motive for not yet supporting it.

Their motive for not supporting it is it requires investment in the backend.

Yes and I'm sure the market doesn't currently warrant them to move at pace hence the tardiness.

Main reasons for it for me.  No need to take phone when walking / running, gym, going up the road to the store for ice cream and spending less time on the phone (if you don't have it with you you can't waste hours on twitter/reddit etc).

SaskiaDonnell:

Hey there, sorry for the delay in response and that I am unable to provide you with a more definitive update yet. We are working hard on our offering for all our customers and will have an update early in the new year.

Hey @pwner

I see you are active and posting GZ today with the magical 2Degrees badge, See above post from 27th October last year...... Can you please flick a friendly email over to the Mobile team, the radio silence is doing them no favors....

Bundling and using something to grab a pre-sale order and lock said phone into a contract with something you don't even support as a company is very deceitful (my LTE watch that 2Degress wont provide an eSIM for, the 2Degrees supplied)

Cheers

In November, when I was in a store getting an eSIM, the manager mentioned wearable eSIM trials were happening, so I figured the announcement would be soon.

Well you might not be able to get a mobile plan for your Apple LTE watch yet, but at least the 2D marketing department can put you in the draw to win a 'Data Pinata plushie' toy in there latest promotion to keep their customers happy. Just what everyone has been waiting for NOT.

So the wait goes on, remember its going to happen soon, or maybe later :)

Watch it, some marketing person will steal your “soon later” idea for timelines and hashtags

It's amazing how much goodwill 2D has lost since the merger with (aggressive takeover by) Vocus.

It's been a massive shift in a different direction but with the same advertising as if they haven't changed - yet here we are lamenting the radio silence and lack of movement on a solution that everyone else has implemented in the market and there's crickets.
It's almost like they don't want mobile customers.

Agreed. 2degrees like to pretend that nothing has changed, but as a customer I have seen big changes across their operating model and in their customer service. Each team, e.g. broadband, seems to be competing against other teams, e.g. mobile, and they no longer seem to talk to one another.
