Hey people just joined up to ask whether slingshots download speed is comparable to telecom.
I know they where experiencing problems but from the sounds of things everythings fine.
I'm currently on telecoms $51 a month for 10gb of usage and want to upgrade to something with more usage.
Slingshots deal of $45 for 20gb seems awesome but want to know if watching videos on youtube will be a problem and also what speeds can I expect from downloading megaupload, rapidshare files on a free account.

I have seen in screenshots people getting around 100-150kb/s in at least some of the rapid share ( like ) sites.

You tube:
- Slingshot have caching servers for you tube. There is also easy access to the orcon you tube caches, so videos buffer fine 90% of the time. The odd video that has to be buffered internationally ( usually sydney ) requires a stop or two to let buffer.

As for speed comparison.

Its slower than telecom, they do not have as much bandwidth to play with, but that is substituted for the higher data cap / lower price, ( however you want to look at it ). Not to mention the free data off peak period.

Some rough estimates:
- usually get near line speed or high speeds for national data.
- usually get 2-3 mbit for international speeds.

* note that I am on AYCE and not a capped plan.

bandwidth is cheap, they just don't buy enough, so they can line thier pockets, as stated by the current international bandwidth provider, when asked what they had to say about pacific fibre's new line coming into the country in 2013 offering pay per customer(unlimited bandwidth) rather than priced for bandwidth blocks, they stated that New Zealand isn't even close to using the avalible bandwidth.

So yea, lining corporate pockets, and having people support them by spouting the same tired old stuff, is awesome.

please, continue to beleve that while you beleve that they really need to charge you $7 for a burger at the fast food joints you go to.

(it costs them about 1$ to make the larger burgers, that includes the shipping of the goods, wages, price of the products to make them, the other $6 is pure pocket lining.)

wake up New Zealand :P the rest of the world is ripping you off, and you're taking it, even defending it, like stupid sheep.

Do you even know how much international bandwidth is? I think you'll find the southern cross cable is underutilised because it's horrifically expensive. What you pay for for your home BB connection probably wouldn't even cover 1Mb/s, let alone the costs of running an ISP on top of that.

NZ doesn't need another cable for bandwidth, it needs another cable for competition.

Yea the last few nights have been fantastic ! Slower than in the morning of course but more than 1mbps !! and youtube buffers properly!

I can get about the same, yet my well seeded torrent is getting 20kB/sec right now, similar seeded torrents were hitting 1.3MB/s in the morning. So no, not fixed.

No, I am on naked DSL so am paying per meg, and getting performance that is worse than I would accept from an all you can eat plan at sometimes. Only thing making it worthwhile is the free offpeak when it goes OK on cached torrents.

Whatever they are doing in networks, is working. Speeds back up to 3.5 - 5.8mbps at night. ( nationally at least anyway. ( ADSL1, AYCE plan btw )

Almost what I was getting before the system went bust on us.

Much better slingshot. :)

I'm on naked DSL with slingshot and its been a few weeks of 1mb/s download speeds instead of between 12-16mb. So much for streaming video, flash, skype etc etc, and not sure if my Italk phoneline is always working at these low speeds.

have yet to see any change. Slingshot website doesn't say the fault is resolved and still lists it as a nationwide problem. i would switch ISPs but no other ndsl service offered here.
