Anyone elses speeds just die over the last week or so?

Chch based. Used to get ~7mbps, now I'm lucky if I crack 2.

Yup I am in Nelson and speeds have been pretty bad over the last week, at times downloads have been having trouble breaking 5KB/s other times they have been around 100KB/s.

PC: 3.3ghz Core i5-2500, 8gb DDR3, ATI Radeon 5850, 27" QHD IPS Monitor

Mobile Phone: iPhone 5 32gb Graphite.

I've been getting around 100KB/sec lately also, down from the around 200 KB mark.
It's happened before though so hope they return it to the previous level again like they did last time.

I'm a newish customer (had my naked DSL for a whole month now) and ... yeah, it's really not that fast. I'm cabinetised so the line rate is 16MBps but international is pretty slow -- <1Mbps to my VPS in Germany most of the time. My old TelstraClear cable connection was faster but we moved and the new place isn't connectable.

So: good price, pity it's so slow. I could understand it if I was on an all-you-can-eat plan, but I'm not. Was slingshot always this slow?

Yip, they've never been very fast, a few years back I could get a max speed of 100kB/s locally, changed ISP to Telecom and got 800kB/s with the same sync speed.

When you say peak, are you talking about evenings or the 2am to 8am offpeak that really seems to be the manufactured peak?

In anycase, since starting to push stuff thru a VPN, I only ever get 100kB/s regardless. Its like there is a throttle of under a megabit on all VPN traffic at all times.

Rsync over ssh also gets the same non stellar result, but it seems that I can have both at the same time for a staggering total thruput of 200kB/s give or take

Testing now (so, er, 3.45 on a thursday afternoon), with iperf sending data to my slingshot connection from various locaitons (TCP, 30s test):

VPS in Germany: 921Kbps
VPS in Florida: 855Kbps
VPS in Auckland (on an Unleash.net.nz connection): 4.31Mbps
Desktop box at work in Wellington (on FX.net.nz): 3.34Mbps

Running the same test from the two overseas VPSes simultaneously: 645(Germany)/718(Florida) Kbps.

I should try this with a Xen VPS from rackspacecloud, that'd let me make sure the TCP settings are OK.

Rsyncing over ssh at 25kB/s at the moment. Same server to the laptop on a friends xtra connection went at 450kB/s.

This is during the evening when I am paying a large amount for the data, so its really not acceptable. Even the free offpeak times get better speeds!

I went telstra, and get 14mbit/s connection rate, 12mbit/s download speeds

this is the same line that slingshot told me "it was my line that was the problem"

when I was with slingshot, I was getting 7mbit/s connection rate, and actually download speeds of 220kbit/sec

new isp. get one its worth it, slingshots not worth the price, any 30$ 512kb/sec plan is faster than them, for 1/4th the price

Yes, it's a pity about Slingshot speed. I was with them a few years ago & I loved being able to buy data blocks, but if you read old threads in this forum it's always speed issues.

Two other good ISPs worth a look are Inspire.net & Snap.net Some of these small (ish) ISPs offer really good service & solid speeds.

I've noticed all the people who were defending slingshots god aweful speeds have stopped posting in this thread, when I originally posted here, I had a ton of people giving me the same old regurgitated crap like "international bandwidth is expensive", which has nothing to do with this topic, 220kbit/sec on a 8mbit/sec line...totally no excuse for that.
