iOS 17.6 and WatchOS 10.6 should be released this week - hopefully tomorrow. No idea if this will align with 2degrees announcing support for eSIM wearables.

If 2degrees do not announce support, then next available slot is probably iOS 18 and WatchOS 11 when new devices are announced in September(ish).

I would hazard a guess that they've given up on the idea of enabling wearables.

@Handsomedan I am sure we should see it in iOS 17.6

At this point in time, I do not believe anything someone from 2Degress says, and happily advocate for friends and family to not spend their money with 2Degrees.

The First post in this thread, from 4th Aug 2022 (6 years after eSIMs were first rolled out, and now 102 weeks ago) the press release, and I quote “We know there’s massive demand for eSIMs from a range of users. I’m happy to say we have taken the first step today, enabling eSIMs for businesses. Consumer plans will follow in the coming month, with wearables on the roadmap for after that.”

Fast forward three weeks, and a new press release on the 22nd Aug 2022 states “the next step is making eSIMs available on wearable devices”

On 13th Sept 2023, @SaskiaDonnell advises “The team is actively working on additional eSIM functionality - we'll share more as soon as we can” in relation to @Michaelmurfy questioning them.

Then something sounded promising, on 27th Oct 2023 @SaskiaDonnell advises “We are working hard on our offering for all our customers and will have an update early in the new year.”

This got me interested in moving over as my contract with Spark was at the end of life, so jumped over, and bought 4 active sim connections with me.

In the beginning of this year, preorders for the S24 Ultra were Bundled with a FREE LTE Watch! I thought great, they must have their shit together and be ready to launch eSIMs very very shortly, there is no way they would sell or advertise a product they don’t support…..

The Samsung Gear S2 Watch from Late 2015  (8 Years, 9 months ago now) launched with the ability to use an eSIM, Apple followed shortly after with the Watch Series 3. It is not new tech 2Degrees.

The silence, the lack of progress (Actually launching it) is just stupid now.

We are now passed the half way point of 2024, into 3rd qtr of 2024 and still radio silence…

Thanks for reading my rant…

PS. You need to update your website, on the about us page you advise  “We’re a full-service telco connecting good sorts all around New Zealand. Innovating at every turn” Pretty sure this thread is clear indication of a lack of innovation.

It is very simple to switch carriers.

Bluntj: It is very simple to switch carriers.

Simple, yes. But I’ve got a different use-case where I like having at-least 2 different providers.

Where I go, that’s both Spark and 2degrees. Both my wife and I have both. My main number is with 2degrees and I have a secondary number with Spark. Wife has a primary with Spark and a secondary with 2degrees (data share sim) just as a backup.

OK… so sure, it isn’t required. But we travel a fair bit around NZ and so it’s a nice to have. I could switch to One NZ and lose out on the data share sim for my wife to get my watch running but I have been holding out because esim for wearables have always been “around the corner”.

To be honest I can’t fault the 2degrees network, it’s pretty solid. What I do have a problem with is when they don’t listen to their customers either when they introduced plans with sharing (oh, but “unlimited”) or screwed around with prepaid data sharing or even now when we get total silence…

I’m still hopeful they’ll release it soon. But seriously, it’s getting stupid now because in this thread alone there are broken promises and now silence. No innovation at all. I miss when providers were competitive both in the innovation space and also pricing.

I think the main issue here is that we get promised an update and then nothing. A couple of us have people on the inside and I’m even having issues getting an answers or confirming it’s still activity being worked on.
If they would just give clear answers and updates even if it’s a “we hit an issues and it’s been moved down the priority list next update in 3 months” then a lot of us would have been happy and not jumped ship.

I watched a YT video about 8 weeks ago and the CEO of 2degrees Mark Callander was in it and he spoke about eSIM and top of the list was getting eSIM for wearables working: Edit found YT video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piSGESpxqZY&t=1874s

They start talking about eSIM at the 29 min 50 sec mark

Edit: Sorry Stephen Kurzeja not Mark Callander

We also have to remember it “might” be ready on the telco side but Apple isn’t fast about turning stuff on until it passes all their tests etc.

Also Apple does demand interesting things when enabling new services (I.e. when a bank releases Apple Pay Apple demands that no other payment service via phone/watch can happen at the same time I.e. google pay).
I suspect this is the same with eSIM on wearables (I.e. Samsung lte on watches).

Thanks for the link. Interesting that he states July for eSIM support for Samsung and then support for others to come with no date.

From memory One NZ launched with Samsung first, and then Apple a couple of months later.

One NZ released eSIM for Samsung Watch early August 2023 and then eSIM support for Apple Watch late October 2023 (which also aligned with iOS 17.1)
