ok it appears I have got to the bottom of it...

when I access & use 0.facebook.com I get redirected to m.0.facebook.com which is their mobile site which has pictures etc and hence charges

If I access zero.facebook.com I get to their txt only FB site

Can anyone else confirm that if they explicitly access 0.facebook.com they get redirected to m.0.facebook.com and get the mobile version with pics etc

Nope, I go to 0.facebook.com and stay there (a bit boring) :-)

Did you perhaps choose the m.facebook.site from the link at the bottom? Sometimes your browser seems to remember these choices the next time you go to a site.
