trakman: google says 1.2km, but I have no idea where the actual mothership is on airedale street ;)

check it

google says 5 wakefield street? (http://www.zoomin.co.nz/info/nz/auckland/auckland+central/wakefield+street/5/-airedale+st+exchange/)

i assume lines probably don't go in a straight line around there though.  you may want to see what attenuation other people around you have?

if yours is way higher it can mean a wiring problem.

but then it says that you edited it in 2007?

lol I added that exchange location info to Zoomin back in 2006 - ROFLMAO, I rule!

Yip 1.2km seems way too low. My maps calculation is based off straight lines, not real world cable wrapping.

I remember now a PM I had with another member here and we calculated I was around 1.7-1.9km from the exchange as my output power is between 17 and 19dBM:

"it roughly works out to be 1dB per 100m ... but of course when you get over the 1km mark, it doesn't scale as well."

will try and get some line stats from my neighbours for comparison Good idea mercutio
what area are you in? who's your ISP and what are your line stats and throughput like?

You are about 1.5km from exchange, but it does depend on what route the cable runs, so could be up to 2km or more. The other thing to factor in is you hang of a very large exchange, so chances are there is a lot my DSL crosstalk, so you will get a lower sync than someone hanging of a cable with only a few DSL pairs in it. Either way, I expect you should still be capable of at least 10Mbps speed.

The reason you will have got more previously on Orcon is they use a lower SNR margin, so a trade off in stability for a gain in speed.

i'm with a small isp who wholesale's dsl lines off orcon, and i live ages out.

Down Up
SNR (dB): 11.1 12.7
Attn(dB): 29.5 12.5
Pwr(dBm): 0.0 12.8
Max(Kbps): 14672 960
Rate (Kbps): 10110 888

it works out to about 1megabyte/sec when no-one else is using the net.

down power is screwed.

but if i look at my neighbours connection on xtra.

[DSL Modem Stats]
US Connection Rate: 732 DS Connection Rate: 6634
DS Line Attenuation: 30 DS Margin: 13
US Line Attenuation: 12 US Margin: 9

that is partially what difference modem can make, and partially they have full interleaving on, this connection has low interleaving on.

so my connection is about 50% higher throughput down and half the latency to auckland.

Update 2:

-EUBA hasn't made a difference
-Coffeebaron scheduled to come out tomorrow to assess/fix my internal wiring and install master splitter
-re-keyed my address into Orcon's site over the weekend - and it now states I can get Genius.
Have placed order to get my connection upgraded to Genius, waiting for RFS date.

Will upgrading to Genius have any impact (for the better) on my performance?
My RFS date is thursday 10th may, when should I expect my shiny new genius router? :)

I found no difference after switching to Genius plan, I received the router 1 day before my scheduled switch over. Then the switch over date got pushed back by 3-4 business days..

Coffeebaron came over tonight and examined my internal wiring.
We went to my basement area where the phone lines come in to the building.
Cut the 2 copper wires at the source and temporarily wired in a small plug for my dsl modem, plugged that in there was no significant change to my sync rates or throughput. Glad to rule out my internal wiring isn't the problem!
A good quality splitter/filter was installed too.

Orcon Genius gets cutover on thursday. Hopefully that will make a big difference.

Do you think it's too late to ask for my phone number not to be ported over to Genius?
I'm getting nuisance calls and would gladly take a new number
I have to unplug my phone at night... (!)
