Chorus tech called this morning stating that my DSL is now connected up with Orcon (ex-Telecom).
Phone line is now live again. My DSL light is solid green. Seems to train a lot faster too but my sync speeds are still LOW. He said the Orcon end would be done at 5pm.

I called the Helpdesk for my username and password (do you need it on BUBA?) and they said something or rather went through at 4:10pm and it can take up to 48 hours for the rest to go through as some stuff about my line/connection wasn't showing up on their end yet and if it didn't by Sunday night I should call back  and they could manually run something to force it.

I see my Noise Margin is 12 dB. And Trellis is: On.
Shouldn't it be 6dB for noise margin and Interleaving Off with Orcon?

Small Gripe: I wasn't given a choice of number, unlike with Telecom, is that in the too hard basket? or have Telecom not allowed other providers access? The guy on the phone said the numbers are assigned automatically... when I joined Telecom they gave me a choice and I got a sweet-as number!

So my main point here is still this:
I used to get 16MBit with Orcon 9 months ago, nothing has changed on my end.
Would a Master filter make much of a difference with only 2 phone jacks, a few meters apart and nothing else plugged in?

noise margin is about right, lower gives you higher sync rate but less stable.

your attenuation and your sync speed matches up, so perhaps your line's more noisy now than what it was 9months ago. Do you remember what your attenuation was?

I may have gotten 26 dB line attentuation downstream, but my memory is hazy.

I called this morning, got my password reset and am now surfing, albeit slowly.

My order has finished but not completed so I have to wait until monday as the tech said he was
unable to display my asid so couldn't do a line test on his end. I gave him my sync speeds from my modem.

He said I used to be on LLU (Orcon Gold+) and now am on Telecom Wholesale probably due to recent cabinetisation. So he said I'm no longer on Orcon gear, but Telecom gear leased to Orcon.

My line mode is saying ADSL2+
But my connection appears to be more like ADSL1 :S

Asked for whitepages listing to be removed and Interleaving off.
He has put those orders through for the provisioning team.

Will re-visit this thread on Monday, have a good weekend everyone.

I'm actually confused by your recent threads and this one.

Your noise margin will be 12dB if you're connected via a Chorus ISAM on a Wholesale connection. Comments such as your one about phone numbers seem to suggest that you thought you were connected via Orcon gear, when you won't be if you're serviced by a cabinet.

And yes any more than a single jackpoint will cause issues. It only takes a dodgy connection somewhere to cause huge spikes in attenuation. If you have nothing else plugged in you should plug your modem directly into the incoming jackpoint and disconnect the other one.

Your address comes up as hanging of AK exchange, rather than a cabinet, so unless Orcon have run out of ports at the exchange, or there is an unknown cabinet, then should be no reason for not being on Orcon LLU gear.
I'd phone again and ask:
- am I on cabinet or exchange?
- if they say cabinet - please can I have cabinet ID (and post info here)
- if exchange, am I on LLU Orcon gear?
- if not, why not?

am I on cabinet or exchange? - if they say cabinet - please can I have cabinet ID (and post info here)

I just called up and I was told I am on a Wholesale connection, BUBA, on a piece of hardware called a neax 61k - the guy said it was an older piece of equipment.

>if exchange, am I on LLU Orcon gear? - if not, why not?

The guy said that all the areas around me had been cabinetized, but I am connected to the AK Exchange that's why I'm not on Orcon gear.
He put me on hold for a while, then just came back and said the same thing and urged me to look at the SAT tool, then asked if there was anything else he could help me with...

I don't know why I'm not on Orcon equipment when I used to be at this same address, pre the whole cabinetization rollout.

I guess I'll have to try and find another ISP..

What ISP's have their own equipment in the AK exchange?

I don't care too much about a VOIP phone, but should I try XNet Fusion?
Will that guarantee I will get connected to newer, faster, better equipment.

I need t0 know 100% that I will get on a EUBA connection or a decent connection before I sign up to any one else. This is getting super frustrating.

Hey Bud, long time no see...

If you're connected to orcon on the purple network, its likely you are connected to the exchange directly rather than a cabinet. Not many, actually none that I know of use SLLC (sub local loop) where they put equipment in the cabinet or buy tails to the cabinet.

With telecom or a chorus reseller you'd likely be directly on the closest source like a cabinet:
[exchange] ---- 3km's for instance --- [cabinet] ---- 1km for instance --- [your home]
This would give you a good sync rate as you're only 1km from the closest kit

With a LLU provider such as Orcon I believe you'd be connected like this.
[exchange] ---- 4km's for instance ---------- [your home]
A worse off sync rate because you're not on the cabinet.

Cheers
Barry

I called yesterday and after re-iterating my problem the technician decided to move me off Wholesale BUBA and on to an Orcon LLU connection, yay!

She said we would continue troubleshooting afterwards if that didn't make a difference.
I really hope it does the trick.

I just received a text message and e-mail from Orcon this morning with a New Work Order for EUBA - Interleaving Off.

Thanks Baron, I owe you one!

Will my new EUBA connection mean I will get an Orcon Genius Lite modem?
My phone is a analogue, cordless DECT.

Oh I see. Please explain 'generally better' please
Sounds like not Orcon gear  but some Telecom hardware better than a NEAX 61k? :)

well they may be getting terms screwed up too.

generally speaking EUBA is a service from chorus, which often provides more bandwidth then BUBA connections, with Ethernet rather than ATM handover, and is more flexible.

although EUBA can still run into congestion issues, it's not as common, and by having more handovers can be alleviated as it's not forced dimensioning.

it's unlikely to effect sync rate, but interleaving can slightly, but should mean that peak time performance is better with less stuttering of page loads, timeouts etc.

googling neax 61k it appears that's a legacy voice switch, which should mostly matter for  things like callerid.

thanks mercutio!
I am using callerID, but I don't care if I lose it if it means getting more bandwidth/better internets.

out of curiosity have you checked how far away from exchange you are?  chorus.co.nz/sat should give you a general idea.  you have similar attenuation to me, and i'm 2.1km away from a cabinet.
