Always do your research first.

That's the thing - I did research, and even asked 2Degrees. Obviously I missed seeing a thread here but 2Degrees only referred me to http://www.2degreesmobile.co.nz/help and said that I should contact them if I have any issues sending or receiving txt messages from Twitter or Google. Even at the store on Sunday the staff said there shouldn't be any problems. Nobody said the service doesn't work at all and is not even set up.

Perhaps this should be added to the 2Degrees FAQ's so people are aware of it.

Either that or people are aware they can't get the SMS messaging so don't sign up ;)

It's just a matter of convenience. I get sometimes over 100 emails a day. If I was to wake my phone and go to email every time an email notification came through I wouldn't do anything else all day. To get notification from an app the app needs to be running and synch needs to be running constantly - something that quickly discharges the phone battery so is not feasible if you want your battery to stay live all day.
The incoming SMS from Twitter are a real time-saver and have become a normal part of the way I work. Changing to some other method which is not as efficient, introduces time delays, and which wastes a lot of otherwise productive time isn't really an option.

If the incoming Twitter messages cost you money then how about giving people an option on their plans to have a total of x number of txt messages per month where the incoming Twitter messages come off their allowance? Surely something could be done?

This has happened to me recently as well. Last month i was getting the txts fine, but now i have to get the call, which works at least.

Don't have a smartphone yet, so can't use the app.
