I'm new to 2Degrees and have noticed that I no longer get calendar alerts or SMS messages from Google. I am not able to send txt messages to update Twitter and am no longer receiving txt messages for mentions and DMs. Is this standard with 2Degrees or have I missed something?

FWIW, I discussed the service at the local 2Degrees store and was assured that everything I was doing on Vodafone could still be done with 2Degrees. Is there anything else thats not supported?

Its a bit of a complicated area, and having a ported number doesnt help.

Heres a thread about a similar problem with vodafone http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=40&topicid=102960

I have the same problem with the SMS for Google 2 step authentication to my ported (from Vodafone) 2degrees number. It initially worked, but now I have to use the call back facility instead.

Instead of the SMS you can use the Google Authenticator app for iOS, Android and a third party for Windows Phone...

Thanks for the heads up. I may have to check them out.

Thanks. I ported my number from Vodafone, which I knew could bring *some* problems. Losing all Google and Twitter SMS functionality wasn't expected though. This is a deal-breaker for me unfortunately.

Not that this is particularly helpful, but: this service comes and goes, so it might work next week

That works well for getting into GMail but the SMS service provides much more than just authentication. Having to login to Google just to get an authentication code for a new app password is a real pain - especially when you are used to having Google send these by SMS. I miss my calendar notifications too.

The lack of push SMS messages from Twitter is making Twitter next to useless for me. I guess it all depends on the way you use Twitter but going into an app several times a day just to check if someone has mentioned me or sent me a DM is a waste of time.

Apparently NZ does not rate highly enough on either radar to bother using a reliable provider.

Google Calendar alerts definitely work with 2degrees -- I use them myself. I think the problem is with ported numbers as my wife has an ex-Vodafone number on 2degrees and she can't set up notifications. Is this is an issue with Vodafone's system?

Any idea why Twitter messages don't? Is this something 2Degrees has just failed to enable?

Unfortunately, termination of messages into 2degrees isn't free; national roaming costs make it uneconomic at present to offer a high volume free service though it is possible in future that that might no longer be the case.

In any event Twitter can notify you via email or the native iOS and Android notification systems, which probably accounts for the lack of demand for this service from the bulk of our customers.

I knew this was going to be an issue before I ported - I didn't make the move to 2degrees lightly or blindly/

Always do your research first.

My interpretation of your post is that somewhere in "the system" there are routing tables that dictate where the messages need to go to be delivered correctly. And so, when texts arrive from international sources, they look at the routing tables and forward them through to the correct handset on the correct carrier. But when a number is ported to another carrier, somewhere in the system the routing tables don't always get updated to reflect the change, and the text gets lost.

To me, this seems to be a fault that could be fixed, either by Vodafone forwarding the text on to the ported number, or by fixing the routing tables further up the chain.

SS7 SMS delivery is a two stage process. The first involves Vodafone forwarding on a query message, which they do. Sometimes - and this is what Google's carrier did at first - the number isn't formatted correctly and Vodafone's system doesn't know to forward it on.

When it does, however, we need to reply directly to querying carrier. If we are not able to reach that carrier (or they cannot signal back directly to us) the message fails at that point.

Alternatively the carrier could already know about NZ number portability and send it directly to us in the first place as you suggest, but that is highly unlikely.
