Indeed. But I was just curious about what results the snap address checker would give before biting the bullet and going for VDSL2.
It's safe to say I would probably get some pretty good speeds. Line speeds anyway.
Upload speeds are the main kicker when it comes to ADSL2+, especially with online backups.

Hmm, obviously the attenuation figures are completely different for VDSL. Do you have a Thompson VDSL router?

Absolutely! That's one of the main reasons I'm so keen on VDSL. It's high time we were all able to move into the 21st century with some decent upload speeds!! 1mbit is just way too slow. When you're trying to backup 80+GB of data for instance it just takes forever!!

Interesting. These guys are all (theoretically) syncing at 50mbit ore below but some are getting 70mbit speeds!? How does THAT work!? I'm guessing the answer is 'Magic' :D Or unleash have some way of getting faster profiles put on their customer's lines...

BTW, does anyone know of a VDSL router comparison review anywhere? I'm wanting some actual sync speed test results but can't find any.

Yes it's a Thompson, It's completely useless for everything except I use it for half bridge to a linux firewall.
I've heard good things about the draytek ones too.

Still got the fritz, It runs SIP / Wireless / DECT / Some NAS etc

Huh, interesting; On that thread you linked to earlier dontpanic42, there is a quote from CUnl who seems to know what he's talking about:

CUnl: However, Dynamic Line Management (DLM) will monitor your line proactively and alter your VDSL profile accordingly.
DLM will automagically upgrade/downgrade your profile (i.e.: 8b/17a) and interleaving level.

According to wikipedia the 17a profile is 100mbit! So based on that, maybe you can get higher than 50mbit speeds?

Also from the same page:

VDSL2 deteriorates quickly from a theoretical maximum of 250 Mbit/s at source to 100 Mbit/s at 0.5 km (1,600 ft) and 50 Mbit/s at 1 km (3,300 ft), but degrades at a much slower rate from there, and still outperforms VDSL. Starting from 1.6 km (1 mi) its performance is equal to ADSL2+

speed tests are often unreliable. telstraclear speed test (i'm not on telstraclear) always gives faster than my adsl sync speed.

right now it gives 20.71/0.95 when i sync just under 19 megabit.

the most reliable way to test speed seems to be to test an http download of a large file.

that said i think if you get 50 megabit it's going to be a lot faster than 20 megabit, and an extra 20 megabit wouldn't make as much diff. the main limitation telecom are doing is on the upload speeds which are artificially capped. (adsl on telecom wholesale caps speeds as well by setting a really high snr margin - making 24 megabit impossible)

If things are still the same, Chorus only allow profile 8b at the moment. The reason you see some people with 70mb/s is because they are on the 17a profile that was either setup during trial periods or specifically requested at the time before Chorus started rejecting them.

Sync is more or less the same on both devices, I think the Thompson might have had 0.5mbit more possibly.
Only using the Thompson because it supports half bridge NAT, Some users have reported being able to get PPPoE auth working through the Fritz box however this would then place it outside my network / behind my firewall and I wouldn't be able to use it for those other features.

No we wont charge you if you move house, normal connection charges will of course apply if you need wiring at your new house! also if you move house and are unable to get VDSL2 we will allow you to continue your contract on ADSL.

Also you will be able to move to our UFB plans (when they are released) without penalty too.

You can also do a full line test from our website, put your address in and it will check the local DSLAM, and also your copper loop length to give you an idea of VDSL2 availability.

Can you tell us when the UFB plans will be released?
