These pictures are from a couple of years ago (they're actually from the GZ thread 'Team Vodafone Sailing'), but it shows the hardware is definitely up to task if the network can cope!

What happened to all those overheads! my understanding of real world HSDPA speeds is flipped upside down haha. Impressive!

Speedtest.net is very handy for seeing what speed you get, but it also gives some odd results. I have had a phone set to 2G and speedtest.net report a download of 1Mbps which is completely unobtainable.

the only real way to test your speed is with a sustained FTP transfer or even bit torrent.

Generally the max speeds are as someone else said around 80-90% of the Theoretical max speed.

Personally i think the best test of a network is if it can handle video as it allows some buffer but will still show up if performance drops for too long and it gives a more sustained test, e.g. 30-60 minute show of on demand TV running at lest 600kbps.

Yeah im a bit skeptical of speedtest.net, its often higher or lower than the actual speed is on mobile data.
Anyone got any impressive real world tests for example? multithreaded downloads? Caps are too small for me to try one myself

From experience, 2degrees' network can't handle that.

From experience, 2degrees' network can't handle that.


I have done this on 2degrees while going down the motorway at 80-100km/hr (not driving!)
but it will all depend on the device, radio conditions at the time, etc.

Can i ask why one would sometimes get h+ and quickly drop to h and most of the time h only? Overloaded? Other cause? Not that the h+ makes any difference to speed i must say! (speedtest.net

When not transmitting/receiving you go back to slower speeds.
Not all 2deg cell sites are h+ yet.
