What phone are you using, and what is your signal level like? (dBm)

neoprint: Yeah I frequently get 6-7mbit on my P500 in Dunedin, that's about as good as I would be expecting on that phone. If I put my vodafone SIM (from my work phone) in the same handset I get 2-3 tops

I don't know how you manage 6-7mbit on a p500 which its a 7.2mbit HSDPA device and real world speeds are usually about 60% of the rated spec at most.
I still experience random (seemingly forced) disconnections regularly, but for web browsing, it's only mostly a non-issue.

I regularly achieved 6.5-7.0mbit/s on my iPhone 3GS a couple of years ago, it's definitely possible.
