Would be good for the olds, but Pukekohe isn't covered. No good for me, works out more expensive.

sbiddle: I guess we need to know how they're deploying services. I'm guessing they could be using Baseband IP for the voice with UBA on top it's limited to the areas where an ISAM-V card is deployed.

Not available at my place on WHK/A or at my work on WHK/AP, but is available at my parents' who are directly on the WHK exchange.

wonder how the prepaid bit is going to work in reality?

I mean, with prepaid mobile when your subscription pack comes due and you have no credit, you don't get it (obviously), but you can still recieve calls etc on your phone.

so what happens here when you fail to top up your prepaid account with Flip? Does your landline get cut off? Does your broadband stop working (the broadband is free, so you shouldn't need to have credit for it to work theoreticaly)? does it start up again once you have paid?

ETA; I also seriously doubt slingshot have 60% coverage of NZ households unless you include all the cabinetised customers, which means they would get crummy BB because of midpoint injection.

That is of course assuming it's delivered over ULL. My pick (unconfirmed) is it's Baseband IP over copper + UBA.

NonprayingMantis: They also need to be very careful about advertising ?free? broadband.

The comcom doesn?t like you advertising a free product that requires you to buy something else.
http://www.comcom.govt.nz/add-ons-and-hidden-fees/

"If something is advertised as free, it must be truly 'free'. This means there must be no extra cost to the customer above the normal price of the goods, whether up-front or built into the price.
For example, 'free delivery' must be just that. It is deceptive to add on the cost of delivery to the price and then claim that delivery is free. If another customer who picked up the goods would pay a lower price, then delivery is not free. Any conditions on an offer to deliver should be made clear, such as if delivery is free only within the central city or only for goods over a certain value.
The same applies to the use of words and phrases such as 'extra', 'give-away' or 'two for the price of one'.
Promotions where customers are offered a free gift for buying a certain item will breach the Fair Trading Act if the cost of the item being sold is inflated to cover part or all of the cost of the 'gift'. Likewise, if a free item is replaced by a discount for those who don't want the item, this may also breach the Act, as it can indicate that the cost of the free item is actually built into the price.
If there are any limitations on the offer, such as 'only with orders over $100', then these should be clearly stated. Items should not be advertised as free if they require the purchase of installation services or additional features.
Advertised promotional bonuses such as free items should be provided automatically, not on the basis of customers having to specifically request them."

I?m not saying they are breaching those rules right now, but I seem to remember Vodafone got pinged a few years back for doing something very similar.
?12 months free broadband? ? when you buy a landline for $50

so I wanted to check whether I was right about Vodafone getting pinged way back for offering 'free broadband when you buy a landline'

can't find much but I did find this thread
http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=40&topicid=16875

don't know whether comcom investigated or not.

Not good, my area of Dunedin is good to go.

Yeah it seems I am just outside Slingshots LLU. Can't find a map anywhere of the exact area though.

even that would be pricing at a loss wouldn't it?

$50 less GST = $43 revenue

baseband IP + UBA is something like $40
and that is before any other costs like backhaul, international data, staff, overheads, etc etc

Yip Baseband IP + UBA would be a minimal loss at $49

LLU based service, I'm told. Only available in those places CP/Sling has access to unbundled lines.

Also, VF was pinged for its original "get your landline and mobile from us and we'll give you 1GB free broadband" because only VF could bundle it at the time. They pulled the promo to avoid a fight with the ComCom. Eventually someone else offered a similar service and now there's this, which almost goes to the same level.

Very pleased to see more competition from ISPs at all levels. This is great for those homes that don't have broadband but are considering how to get into the market. While the big guys add in more data for the same price point, unless you know you want more there's a lack of real entry-level price points. This reshapes that end of town.

good to see.

I just tried a cabinetised address too. Will be interesting to see if they do use the cabinet; else they will have some serious complaints about speed issues.

uisng a cabinet would make them a straight loss (see above posts on Baseband+UBA)) so I suspect more likely is that they will go straight off LLU gear because they are targetting very low users (5GB orless) they are banking on those people not complaining too much about getting poor speed because:

a) they are technically illiterate and unaware of the differences

and/or

b) since they only ave 5GB they probably only want to do email and a bit of surfing so they find that 4Mpbs is absilutely fine for all the stuff they want to do.

Hey guys,

Thought I'd respond to a some of your questions

1. Is it really free broadband with a homeline?

We made sure our homeline price is in line with what people are paying today. In some cases it's less than what's out there, especially when you start to look at other things like toll rates and our $5 phone feature pack.

2. What's our network access layer made up of?

LLU and Baseband Copper.

So in the cases where we can't provide LLU because of a cabinet, Baseband is used.

3. Speeds?

Should be the same or better. We've got a brand new independent data and voice core including our own international links.

4. Should Flip be split off from Slingshot & CallPlus in Geekzone?

Would like that please.

We are a separate business when it comes to down to it - have our own offices, infrastructure and Slingshot are our competition!
