allio: Am I right in thinking you need a Slingshot phone line/naked DSL to use the Better Network, and that a setup where I pay Telecom $45 a month means I'm out of luck?

Partially. You have to have phone & internet with Slingshot - NDSL doesn't qualify.

DravidDavid: The website probably thought you were connected directly to the exchange, but instead a cabinet was in the way. If that was the case, the exchange probably has better network gear in it, but not the right equipment to bypass the cabinet.
It happened where I was living. Everyone said I could get the better network prices, but a cabinet got in the way.

nickb800:
To find out if you are served by Better Network gear, you can login to your router admin webpage, go to DSL stats (probably called something different/similar) and look at the noise margin. This will be around 6db if you are on slingshot gear, or around 12db if on Chorus gear.

Are you sure about those db figures?
I can't get Annex M to connect at my place. Have tried with a Vigor 120 and a RT1320, both just continually loop through handshaking, ADSL2+ connects immediately.
My stats show 12 for SNR, but Slingshot support says I'm definitely on the better network, but as Annex M is not an advertised or supported service they won't troubleshoot it.
DravidDavid:
You are probably on SLUBA rather than UCLL. SLUBA customers have their phone line services put through an exchange, but broadband is put through a cabinet. It is arguably the best service they provide with the broadband being close and the exchange offering the easyphone features, but no fancy features such as Annex M.
You can see if you are using a SLUBA connection via your Visibill in your My Account section. If you are on a standard chorus connection, you will have one ASID. If you are on a SLUBA connection, you will have a UBA ASID and an ASV ASID. If you are on UCLL equipment, you will see an LLU ASID.
On the bottom of Visibill on the left hand side, you will see "Account Management" and underneath will be "Line Descriptions". Your ASID's are listed here. :)

Thanks for that.
Under billing group the first line lists my phone number with status as active, while the second line lists as number starting with llu but it is listed as inactive.
There is also a "go" button to the right of the llu number under "change billing group to"
What does that mean?
Slingshot:
PM me your account number and I can check what network you are on. Or call 0800 89 2000, any tech agent should be able to tell what network you are on instantly. And we are super quiet this month.
Regards
Mike
