Was on the phone to an orcon tech who put me on hold to test something only for the genius router to disconnect twice

Trying to get back through to them now

I told him the Attenuation has jumped up and has halved my connection, and he was like "So what exactly is the problem?" ;\

Just a couple more basic things to check also:

1) Do you have another phone cable (wall outlet to modem) that you could try?

2) Check for visible corrosion on all the connectors you can see.

Not one that's long enough, the phone jacks are in the hallway and the genius router is in my room, it's a 10m extension cable

The only other thing I can do it plug the router directly in to the phone jack and leave it out in the hallway, and run a 10m ethernet cable to my room

Give that a go, just to rule out your 10m extension.

Once you have ruled out the extension I would just insist that Orcon switch you to a wholesale connection and point to the SAT info on the cabinet near you...

My own experience not far from you (Mt eden) is that I was originally on LLU equipment and getting dismal 2mbps downstream and frequent disconnections (I'm quite a bit further from mt eden exchange than you are to mt roskill) After much frustration looking at internal wiring, trying different modems, isolations tests and ISP telling me that cabinetisation wasn't complete at the mt eden exchange so there was nothing they could do, I did more research, spoke to someone else at the ISP and flat out said that the chorus SAT shows the cabinet near me is complete so can they just put me on wholesale please, which they then did. Downstream went up to 13mbps and the disconnections stopped completely.

Moving to Chorus wholesale is very unlikely to address the widely fluctuating attenuation number. Even if you are [also] suffering from midspan injection, there is very likely a pretty dodgy connection or broken wire somewhere that needs to be fixed.

There may or may not be an increase in your bill for a move to a wholesale connection, so I'd suggest getting the wiring fault addressed first, and see if that gives you an acceptable connection. If not, then get on to a move from ULL to Chorus wholesale.

Has orcon moved their tech support overseas, as every guy I've spoken too sounds asian, and it's fustrating me to no end how much I have to explain stuff

I thought only the sales team was moving?

Won't let me edit the above

I have overhead lines and I went out to the power pole to look at the box the lines go to and the lid is missing so it's exposed to the elements, assuming this would have adverse effects?

Very much so - pretty much exactly the problems you are seeing. Hard to tell exactly from your photo, but it looks like the lead in cable from the street is pretty old (30 years or more), so they may replace that at the same time if it is faulty.

Your guess would be right,

THis house is early 1970s built, I've been in it since 1992, same phone lines, had the filter installed roughly 96

I'm ringing back Orcon to tell them about the box outside, hopefully they will send out Chorus to look

These threads are annoying me. So you are running your modem on the end of a 10m extension cord - not smart. There has been not alot of wiring checked. If you are serious about getting this sorted then get a proffesional to check your wiring. You clearly dont understand what you are looking at -not a personal thing, there is just no point mucking around if you dont know what you are looking. Orcon support is known to be terrible so why bother with them.
You do need to ascertain whether or not your closest ISAM is in a cabinet or the exchange. If you are direct feed from an exchange then there is no point moving to a wholesale connection. If there is a chorus cabinet upstream then there is a benefit in moving to wholesale.

First step, get a pro to check the wiring.

Because I pay orcon a wiring and maintenance fee for this exact reason, Why should I have to pay for a "pro" to look at it when I'm already paying my ISP/Phone Provider. I haven't had to ring Orcon Tech for ages so I hadn't known it had gotten this bad ;|
