I went into the 2degrees store and got a sim replacment for my iPhone (original sim was two and a half years old), so far it seems to have cured as it didn't drop off the network all afternoon, but I will see how the rest of the week goes.
Also an interesting thing happened, I was waiting to be served and noticed a staff member was taking the sim out of an iPhone, checking it and installing it again and I happend to ask the people if their phone was dropping off the network and that's exactly what was happening, after explaining mine did that they decided to try the sim swap idea.
After some discussion with the good folks at the local 2degrees store, it appears that there is one rule for Apple products and one rule for the rest of the manufacturers. Data roaming should be turned on to enable roaming outside of the 2degrees canopy. If you have an iPhone, it's largely irrelevant as the iPhone will roam regardless of the setting, and sometimes even access data without an APN entered.
Haven't got to the bottom of the issue of the phone switching to vodafone in downtown Dunedin, but this might be an issue of the 2degrees signal being attenuated by a nearby building.

Just to confirm, you need 'Data roaming' enabled and APN set to Internet on all devices outside our canopy, not just iPhones/iPads.
iPhones 'should' connect inside canopy without these settings however we advise to make sure they're set so customers will be able to jump in and out to stay connected.
Can you PM me the exact location where it's switching to Vodafone inside our canopy, and if you're in a building, which floor? Please also include your 2degrees number.

Interesting. A year or two ago I enabled data roaming on my iPhone at the suggestion of a customer service rep. Just recently I noticed that it was switched off (I must have flicked it off during one of my overseas trips over recent months) so I've re-enabled it. However I don't think my phone has had any problems connecting out-of-canopy while roaming was switched off.
It will be interesting to see whether switching it back on again will resolve the random network disconnections that I've been experiencing from time to time.
