During the cabinetisation project there was talk of reviewing and possibly reducing the SNR once this project was complete, firstly on cabinet based ISAM's since the average copper loop is under 2km (vs an exchange that has both short and long runs).

Clearly nothing came of this..

Thank you all members for your input ( pity snap didn't participate here!! )

I was in the process of outlining all my issues but I am just too tired and frustrated from my experiences with snap and chorus. My experience the last 2 days has been horrendous. Both parties disagreed with eachother and at times, with me ( more chorus ).

Conclusion: I am now locked into a contract, I want out of, but realise that's an impossibility with blasted providers.

My apologies that I am not being more specific.

If they said that you would not get a slowdown when moving and you did, then you have an ability to get out based on that I would think. Not that I like suggesting people move away from snap.

I was informed I may experience a slight drop changing from ULL to Wholesale and slightly higher latency but would not be noticeable. Unfortunately, it has been noticeable for general surfing.

Chorus has checked my home, no problems. He did however mention a problem ( maybe moisture ) somewhere down the road. Fault number not closed as it will ( maybe ) looked into later. I do not believe this is my issue as my stats dropped immediately when changing provider.

Note the stats below, slight drop when switched from D-Link to Fritzbox but still with slingshot. Then when switched provider, the larger drop. Please don't remind me that these tests are not accurate as I have always kept this in mind over the years.

On average, loss of 5 Mbps, sometimes nearer to a loss of 6 Mbps.

Oh, chorus guy did mention that maybe snap doesn't have the same bandwidth allocation as slingshot which surprises me.

If the line rate in the dsl modem is 4-5Mbit lower, the bandwidth Snap or Slingshot have further upstream is irrelevant the first problem is the lower line rate.

What cabinet/exchange are you on and how far are you from it?

You can likely still find the cabinet/exchange info for your address from here:

Note: The address database old so try a different address number for your street if you can't find your exact number.

I am a little less than 1 kilometer from exchange however from what the chorus guy told me, I am fed from the exchange to a cabinet and then down my road. If this is correct, the distance is doubled------ no, tripled as there is a huge "u" turn coming back to my address.

You're either served from a cabiner or an exchange - not both.

Based upon the fact you were on ULL and had OK speeds you didn't have midspan injection issues so will be fed from an exchange.

You shouldn't have 31dB attenuation, but without knowing your exact location of a map in relation it's hard to know what you should have. At 1km with 31dB it's pointing to a wiring issue - I haven't seen in this thread yet what your internal wiring is like.

He he, thought I might get a bite. It's the chorus guy who told me the line from the exchange goes to a cabinet and then down my street to my home. I did raise my eyebrows myself. However, he tried a line test ( unsuccessful ) at the street with no reading. He is guessing but thinks the street has the old lead cable which may have moisture in it somewhere and hence the reason he is not closing the fault that was logged. He went away confused and puzzled.

My internal wiring is no doubt ancient as in standard copper wiring. As I am switching to fibre later this year ( waiting on snap ), I see no point in changing the house wiring and the chorus guy said it was ok after checking it. I repeat, as nothing has changed this week except for changing modem/router and isp provider, surfing has declined considerably.

Oh, my address is Rimu Street wanganui right near Harper Street. If I had a super dupa arm throw, I could nearly hit the exchange.

If you are at that close to the exchange then this points to a wiring fault without a doubt. It may be in the Chorus network but if you are not willing to sort out internal stuff then there may not be much resolution at all. it is also very possible the the local loop length is actually much much linger than you think. All depends how the cable is run in the street. And if the tech says it goes to a cabinet first then it probably does but it will be a passive cross connect cabinet and not an active Whisper cabinet.
It seems very strange Chorus couldn't give some sort of definite diagnosis. I don't see any reason why they wouldn't be able to - apart from being lazy which is becoming a massive problem with fault man these days.

Step 1: Optimize your internal wiring so you 100% know it's not the problem.
Step 2: Continue to insist that Snap fix the problem.

Update:

Wiring untouched.

Latest Fritzbox firmware causing issues.

Snap gave me firmware version:84.05.22 (downgrade).

I manually changed snr to achieve 5db (maybe too aggressive).

Sync from 7.7 to start and now 13.8Mbps.

Still making slight changes to snr as stability may be a problem and error rate has climbed heaps.

Need I say more

Although it's for vdsl, it works for adsl as well.

Basically, you are performing a hack with the saved file from the fritzbox using notepad++ and then restoring that file. Snap is fine with this.
