Try to be brief---- Fritzbox arrived last week and set it up with current provider ( slingshot ). Immediately speed dropped between 1.5 to 2.00 Mbps compared to my D-Link Dsl-2740B modem/router . However, I thought nothing of it for the time being as I was about to switch provider.

Today, switched over from slingshot to snap and now speed has dropped 4.5 to 5.5 Mbps

Called snap but was not really able to help me much. The only suggestion made was to try my D-Link modem/router to see if the speed increased and possibly a faulty Fritzbox. I could not do that as my phone line is now dead as I am waiting for viop to be activated in next day or two.

As slingshot throttle and shape, whereas snap doesn't I am very surprised at these results!

Help would be much appreciated

Edit: Thanks peter reader for reminding me. With slingshot I was on ULL and now with snap on wholesale. Snap informed me prior that this should only effect latency.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

Your old modem should still work even if you're moving to naked/VoIP. Obviously your analogue phones won't work but the Internet should.

Your speeds are pretty much what would be expected for 31dB attenuation. Don't look a speedtest.net results to gauge what your line is capable of doing.
Only recommendation would be do what the robot says and check your wiring. 90% of faults are within the house wiring. If your are Auckland PM coffeebaron and he can sort this out for you.
This can not be attributed to a simple ISP swap unless you came from Slighshot ULL gear where the SNR would be set at 6. You can fiddle with the config in your Fritz and change this if you want. Have a read through the 70 page VDSL thread and you will see what they do to achieve lower SNR's.

Edit: And I don't see why you would have an issue plugging your D-Link back in. A number port has nothing to do with what gear is plugged in at the end.

Actually, I joined the phone/internet package but as chorus was unable to keep my phone number, snap gave me voip option on adsl. Maybe, I am on naked!?

Thanks also chevrolux, I shall play again with the old modem/router. I'm in Wanganui and waiting for snap to give us fibre here roughly september so not bothering with wiring in the home as all has been fine until I switched providers today. Oh, I'm adsl not vdsl.

Chorus use 12dB of noise margin on their line profiles. Slingshot use a more aggressive 6dB.

Noise margin is a buffer (of unused frequency range) to provide stability and prevent disconnections due to noise or spikes on the line.

Basically the Snap connection via Chorus will never sync as high as your previous Slingshot connection via their own equipment but will be more stable.

1Mbit difference you probably won't even notice in real world usage unless you're really looking for at.

@Ragnor, yes I am well aware as this was discussed prior to signing up. As I pointed out earlier, snap informed me of switching providers will affect latency but not to any extreme to notice any difference when surfing. Immeditely, switching D-Link to Fritzbox ( still using slingshot ) I lost 1-1.5 Mbps ) and yes, aware of different chipset etc. Then immeditely switching providers,lost another 4-5 Mbps. In total, I have lost up to half of my past attainable speed which is very noticeable.

Stats previously stated: "attainable down"14444 " up " 1132. Now: down 8.7 up 1.1

Maybe chorus issue? I believe they will investigate if average speed is below 10Mbps but not above.

Now regretting the move which amazes me as slingshot users have had many issues and snap to a much lesser degree.

Fortunately, the wife is away overseas at present as I am in for it when she returns if things don't improve.

Someone from snap able to assist please?

Some modems have the ability to alter the SNR margin to get you back to similar sync rates as you had with Slingshot. Dynalink RTA1320 is one, not sure whether the fritz can.

Obviously if the line is poor instability will rear its head.

Ah I see, I read your post as you'd lost 1Mbit from 5 to 4 rather than lost 4-5Mbit... that's a lot.

Q: Do you know what the line attenuation was before? Also roughly how far are you from the cabinet/exchange?

It's possible Chorus have introduced a line fault/issue when moving the line from LLU equipment to their own eg: could be bad line card in the isam, wrong line profile or something like that.

You will have to go through the normal help desk escalation process with Snap to resolve it I imagine.

Hi,

Just wanted to share my experience. I moved from Orcon to Snap and I was previously syncing at 16000 and now with Snap I am syncing with 12000 so yes as others have mentioned it could be different chip set. However follow up with Snap and see if they can see if there is anything wrong with the card etc as the others have mentioned.

in australia you can set your snr margin with different profiles, in nz we're stuck with high snr margin and lack of annex m (upload speed decrease)

unless you force modem to target different snr margin.

tp-link 8960v4 with snr tweak gives 21 megabit, without gives 14 megabit. so the difference can be quite significant. that's at 3db rather than 6db though. so i think you're probably just seeing the snr and chipset difference. (where 12db is chorus/telecom wholesale)

there are meant to be hacks to adjust snr margin on fritzbox too, but it means editing some file called ar7.cfg or something. google should help.

Go to the OP on "VDSL Performance & Tuning" and go to the "ADVANCED ROUTER TUNING " section.

Changing the SNR involves editing an exported cfg file from the fritz, adding some lines and changing the downstreammarginoffset value that will influence your snr margin.

The tweaking of SNR in that VDSL topic is relevant to any DSL technology really. In theory you can half your SNR margin as the ULL providers seem to get away with 6dB. But then again it comes back to different chipsets working better or worse with the ISAM's. Either way i don't think you will see much resolution from Snap as it isn't something I would think they can fix. If it was a port fault you would generally see them get sorted out when the install is done as the techs will test this in the exchange/cabinet and the customer doesn't know the difference. Maybe the Snap boys could look at the bit loading and then we will know if it is a physical fault. As you mention though probably not much benefit if you want to move to UFB. You could start getting your structured cabling in place though and just rewiring the incoming copper to a single jack in the mean time. Might see some improvements.

Perhaps its time that chorus reduced their allowable margins? Most people are off cabinets now so there shouldnt be as many issues.

Some sort of DLM like function for ADSL would be neat, that looked at errors per minute and adjusted interleaving and SNR accordingly.

I agree though, not as agressive as 6 or 7, but perhaps 8-10.

Would be nice if we could get 6db SNR and Annex M on Chorus wholesale connections. I inquired with Snap about this a while ago but never received a reply on it.
