Apparently you can block access to cache servers to force download direct from the youtube servers, but I'm not sure which IPs to block...

Glad I wasn't the only one having the issue.
unsignedint: Are you guys running IPv6 or IPv4? I had IPv6 enabled on my Fritz box and also found youtube quite slow. After disabling it and forcing IPv4, speeds are much better across the board and youtube buffering became non-existent. As much as I want to support the adoption of IPv6 it seems the v6 network is much weaker, at least in my un-scientific experience.
