Since thursdayish I've seen the same Problem (on multiple ISPs) and have customers who have noticed 100% the same thing. its quite easily reproduceable and I have packet dumps of the problem as well (which have been sent to google).

It thought it may have been caused by a certain carrier which had problems has thursday but reading this it may not be.

It kinda goes like this..

Look at Uncached video it goes to local cache.. it says it doesn't have it so it goes to AU caches.. which send it slowly (or stop sending it for long periods).

NZ Cache (at the same time) starts to download it in the background.

Reload webpage.. it comes from the NZ Cache fine..

Some people won't notice the "problem" as they look at common videos which are already in the ISP's caches.

some people probably look at 240p to 480p videos too, jump to 1440p and most new videos seem to have issues.

i find 1080P videos sometimes struggle, upon refreshing the page, it seems to hit the cache and comes down at line speed off snaps cache..

Just had response from google after we sent them packet traces of the problems.....

"....the packet captures show playback being affected by a known issue (recently introduced) in our server software, for which we are currently rolling out a fix. We expect the situation to improve within 24 hours....."

LOL!

Apparently you can block access to cache servers to force download direct from the youtube servers, but I'm not sure which IPs to block...

Apparently you can block access to cache servers to force download direct from the youtube servers, but I'm not sure which IPs to block...

i think you can accomplish the same thing by changing from NZ to Worldwide?

but i dunno if it'll actually help. i'm going to assume it's probably with google as someone else was saying before, and that a fix should come out shortly.

Are you guys running IPv6 or IPv4? I had IPv6 enabled on my Fritz box and also found youtube quite slow. After disabling it and forcing IPv4, speeds are much better across the board and youtube buffering became non-existent. As much as I want to support the adoption of IPv6 it seems the v6 network is much weaker, at least in my un-scientific experience.

Maybe the local NZ youtube caches you are directed towards (via IPv4) don't have IPv6 connectivity so they will go overseas to get the content via IPv6.

it's a general problem and not just snap.

like vocus seem to route google australia ipv6 traffic via the US.

snap route dl.google.com over ipv6 far away.

also for some strange reason reverse dns on ipv6 is very uncommon.
