I must admit this is getting pretty painful, we're physically 700m from the exchange (yes I know, the copper doesn't work like that), syncing at 7611/428kbps now, with Internet speeds being in the 5mbit range. From the attenuation and what I've seen online we should be getting much higher, plus we have reached 17mbit syncs from this exact location in the past (2009~). I've been bedridden sick the past week or two but I will be installing a master filter this weekend.

Still no word from Orcon other than we've changed interleaving and are investigating, 3 weeks later...

I may have misunderstood something on this thread. But I don't understand how will a master filter help if the problem only occurs at certain times of the night and only with international traffic?

Simply to rule out the issue being something further on my side.

Seriously Orcon are driving me up the wall right now. I have two Orcon accounts, one in my name and another in a family member's for which I am authorised for. They are for different addresses & lines in Auckland. This fault is on the line that is not directly in my name, and I have been emailing back and forth for coming up 4 weeks now. Somewhere along the line they have escalated the ticket and I received a call today saying a Chorus technician would be coming out tomorrow to check on my packet loss... at the wrong address (the one on the other account). Half an hour on hold with Orcon thus far and he is trying to tell me that I have raised two separate issues on the other account (untrue, I can see exactly where Orcon made the mix up).

Just to add salt to the wound, my boss whom I had previously recommended Orcon to asked me to see why his Internet was so slow...

On a line that normally syncs above 10mbit. I'll sort that one in the morning. :C

Replaced the modem at my bosses house and it is syncing a little bit higher (4mbit). Pings and packet loss all over the show though...

...so a similar issue to what I'm having at home. This connection is on Newton Road, Central Auckland and by the looks of things, there are others. Any response from Orcon?

which hop is the latency occuring for your boss?

Assuming there is not a significant amount of upstream traffic on your connection while your ping was done (check the data counter in your modem), and if this is only happening at night, might be due to RF noise from devices & appliances being turned on in the evenings. Have you tried isolating the connection from power sources i.e. using your in house switch board (power)?

Well after 3 weeks of pretty decent Internet the issue has returned and I'm told again to wait two weeks for a response. This is pretty poor Orcon. For reference we had a similar issue with our Telecom connection that took a whole two days to get Chorus to sort, vs thirty.

The Genius enjoys it's own wall socket without a surge protector/anything in between it. Ping spikes are on first hop.
