Putting things in perspective -- the 2 largest telcos (vodafone & telecom) cannot supply you with UFB either.

I agree with that statement. The initial sign over process was previously underway between snap and Ultrafast Fibre who services wanganui and that process came to nothing with no communication from snap at all. Unfortunately, we don't have the luxury of choosing telecom etc at present.

RalphFromSnap: Hi All,

I've flicked this thread through to our network planning team to let them know you are all very keen on UFB in Wanganui, they have let me know that there could be some scope for speeding this up and they will let me know by the end of the day, so I'll post back here as soon as I know!

Thanks,
TheRalph

Awesome.  What did they say?

So I called about Wanganui UFB today, and after a chat with the provisioning team I was told that they are now aiming for "Q4" for a handover install. I had been told September for the longest time. I love you guys, Snap, but this wait is driving me nuts.

I must say, I'm very curious about the size of investment required for an ISP to offer fibre in a new city. Ralph, can you shed some light on this? Or perhaps one of the other industry insiders on geekzone?

My understanding is that you need space in at least one of the POIs (points of interconnect).  For wanganui, that's the main chorus telephone exchange building.  You also need backhaul between there and some other part of your network, and equipment to interconnect between that backhaul and the UFB network.  I don't know if the interconnect can be accomplished by a piece of Cat5e...

If you want to be really reliable you need to interconnect in two POIs, but Whanganui only has one.

You also need agreements signed with the local fibre company (Ultra Fast Fibre in this case).  I believe there is a minimum spend requirement, and you have to pay for the interconnect along with the wholesale fees for each customer connecting through them.

So there are a whole heap of fixed costs you're stuck with, even if you only have a handful of customers.  Some of the cheaper backhaul options aren't available.  I don't think FX have fibre to Whanganui, for instance.

On the other hand, Whanganui has really awesome UFB penetration.  Every house we've been remotely interested in has had UFB available already.  So it'd be a great market to sell UFB based products in.  The downside is it's not a very big market.
