"The telecom device" is not very information. However, as most of their more recent devices have been the Technicolor series, I'm going to guess it's a TG582 or something. You should be able to log in to the web interface, go to Broadband Connection, and then go to Details and see a bunch of info about sync speeds etc.

Where speedtest thinks you are is irrelevant. It's based purely on the geolocation registration of your IP address. Given Snap are Christchurch based, many of their IP ranges are registered in Christchurch.

I would expect to see about 10/1 speed on those line stats, I suspect your internal wiring may be an issue. I'd suggest you get a master splitter installed and a dedicated jackpoint wired up. Not sure who to suggest in Wellington.

Are you in a 10Mbps+ zone according to the Chorus maps? Being in an urban area of Wellington I'd be surprised if you weren't.

If you are, getting those sync speeds suggests it's highly likely your internal phone wiring needs to be sorted.

Yep, I am in the 10meg + area. Snap arranged for Chorus to come out, they got as far as the local box.. something like that, said my speed was comparable to my neighbors and decided no to come and check the internal wiring..

At the end of the day internal wiring is ultimately the homeowners responsibility. If you buy a fridge Harvey Norman won't come and install a new power plug for you.

Chorus will come and fix any obvious wiring fault if you have wiring maintenance, but they will not install a master filter for free. At the end of the day a master filter should be mandatory for every xDSL but the average homeowner isn't willing to pay for it.

It's very hard to know your exact situation but at the end of the day I don't really have any other recommendations other than eliminating your internal wiring to see if it is the cause of the issue.

first thing to try like sbiddle said try to eliminate internal issues.
i personally would start by
1. take all phones and filter off all jake point.
2. take the router off the filter and plug straight into the phone jack leave it for a good 5 minutes
plug the router back in without all the phones and filter into the main phone jack if you know.
3. recheck the router sync info to see if there is any improvement.

its Friday i cant think of anything else to try from here.

"At the end of the day internal wiring is ultimately the homeowners responsibility. If you buy a fridge Harvey Norman won't come and install a new power plug for you" No they won't but I can bet they will tell me I need one and what its spec's should be...

I do have a filter (telepermit ptc281/08/001 ?? ), no idea what the difference between that and a master filter is. If it will help, I will replace it, but the thing is no one can say yes it will help and I am not going to buy a master filter, if it is not what I have, if no one can say if it will help or not. Snap and chorus should between the two of them tell me what, if anything I can do... but they are not and that is what I find frustrating..

Appreciate all the comments here, I have tried as suggested above..

Master filter = hides inside ETP or behind wall outlet, black box. 1 pr in, 2 pr out.

However at the end of the day, the CIR they can still all fall back on unfortunately is relativly low - still only 1mbps?
Of course ISPs like to feed you more than that if they can, but if they want to dig heels in Chorus can say they are providing the required minimum.

The fritz is very smart, if there is a large differential between the 2 modems check the firmware versions and ADSL settings in the fritz, its even able to interrogate the far end device and report back the type of ISAM etc :)

Of course traffic paths are always going to have an effect, but syncrate between ISPs is not likely to differ much. But the compatibility between modems may.

You have a simple in-line filter. You presumably have one on ever jackpoint that has a device attached.

A master splitter/filter will split off a jackpoint dedicated to DSL, and remove the need for inline filters on every other jackpoint. This is the preferred installation (it used to be a requirement to even get DSL installed, and is currently a requirement for VDSL). Getting these installed usually costs between $100 - $200 depending who you go to. If you were in Auckland, I'd say message Coffeebaron on here to get it sorted.

Having this master filter installed at your ETP, and a new line/jackpoint run will, for all practical purposes, rule out internal wiring issues.

Interesting read.
If Snap can guarantee I will get an improvement, I will put one in. But as yet I have heard NOTHING from them about trying to make this work for me.
