you can use vodafone 4g i think. they are 4g friendly.

telecom however .... good luck!

i think this is the 5th 'time i'm reading this in the last 2 weeks (in my own post) ... there sh0uld be a sticky thread about telecom 4g not working on non telecom headsets

- johnr i don't buy that trick about buying a 2d phone and expecting it to work on telecom.

of course we do! what do you expect? buy a mercedes in auckland and it can't be used in the south island? this is the 21st century! not 1990! esp as the specs say LTE!

that's what the technicians know.

but a consumer buys a standard "galaxy note 3 LTE" or a "LG G2 LTE" in NEW ZEALAND (not parellel imported) and it didn't even have a fine print warning "caution do not plug in telecom 4G sim" ... i'd expect it to work

I'm wanting to buy a Nexus5 from the US, mainly because of the ridiculously cheap price offered on Google.

Google will not sell me the NZ (international model) but as I don't have or use 4G, that is no hardship.

I read the appropriate forum on GZ and PM'd two other members who came back to me readily with the answers to my questions.

The difference with your argument is the nexus 5 has a hardware difference with phones that have different model numbers to show this, the Note 3 models are a software differences with phones that have the same model number all round so unless someone can point this out to you it is not obvious.

Hardware vs software, model numbers, etc only mean anything to a small percentage of the phone buying population, a fact us educated Geekzoners often forget. We are a minority :-)

It would be great if every phone worked on every network but as with the remainder (and bulk) of the Telecom mobile network this is not the case. I am sure a lot more people have had this issue trying to use 2G/non 850MHz 3G phones on Telecom than the very small number of people buying a Note 3 supplied by one operator and trying to use it on another.

Yes I think I should be able to use my 2deg Note 3 on Telecom 4G (for a play only, I have no desire to ditch 2deg over it) but I can't, yet.

What is a standard Note3 ?

They just about all have different software versions

a standard note 3 looks like a note 3 they see in the samsung ads.

software versions are not advertised in the fine prints ... are they?

Hopefully an update will be released soon that will fix it but my point of view in the end is that it does not make any $$ for 2Degrees so they are in no hurry to do it.

Pitty we have not gotten any response from 2Degrees over it not even saying anything on their Facebook feed.

No I use to be with Vodafone but I am currently living in Greytown which has bad coverage all round but Telecom has a good enough indoor signal that I don't miss calls, I was always missing call's and texts on Vodafone so I had to switch, am only in Wellington a few days a week so guess its best I wait for an update from 2Degrees as I don't need to Tether every day.
It's one of those town's that is on the edge of all towers but if one provider puts a tower in the town and market it they will probably get a rush of customers from the town to switch but that's another issue.

There is no need for fine print - it's in the big print.

You don't see any major retailers advertise phones without associated network logos or a very clear reference to the network next to them. Look at any of their websites or mailers and they all make this very clear.

To be honest, no i didn't.

It was just implied that because it was NZ new samsung, that it would work perfect in NZ.
(from your point of view, it is correct and i agree now. but thats because you have more knowledge than the average joe consumer)

To the average consumer, they think...
"2deg has no 4G... thats ok, i don't want 2deg 4G anyway"

and like others said... i don't think PBTech would have knew exactly either.
i went back to PBTech, and they "assumed" firmware issues... and wanted 2 days to try find a fix... (they said they would change the firmware/software)
finally i declined because i am guessing it would void the warranty.

but i have accepted whats happened, just have to wait for the right update (emailed Samsung NZ, and doesn't even know when this will happen.)

It's not really to difficult to do the firmware upgrade with odin to get the version you need to work on the network you use, this is exactly what I done with my S4, as far as voiding the warantee any vendor will have a had time time proving that the upgrade to the local phone company firmware somehow made the phone faulty.

The issue with flashing any firmware Legitimate or 3rd party it will trip Samsung KNOX Warranty, no one has really been able to say if this will avoid the hardware warranty or not otherwise this is the path I would of taken.
There is an update for the S4 and I believe the S3 that will install KNOX on them as well so as long as you flash your handset before KNOX came along you will be fine.
I note their tablets have KNOX installed on it too.

Your current version may not have Knox.
I've read elsewhere that Knox is included as part of the 4.3 update to Samsung Galaxy devices. (Which includes Note, S3 and S4 devices as far as I can tell)
Is your Note on 4.2.2 or 4.3?

AFAIK Telecom 4G works fine on any 4G handset that is compatible with the network, and does not have 4G disabled in any way. My Australian sourced Nexus 5 is an example of this - the D821 is the correct model for AU and NZ 4G. It works perfect on Optus 4G as well as Telecom 4G.

I don't have any reason to believe a 2degrees handset with 4G disabled (and therefore not working on telecom) would work on vodafone's 4G, for the same obvious reason. 2degrees will enable 4G via OTA after the network is ready for consumers. This makes sense and Vodafone is not any more 4G friendly by technical definition than telecom is.

AFAIK Vodafone and Telecom did this with the majority if not all of their handsets, i speculate as part of testing the network without creating potential issues for customers, especially if the handset has not been tested on their live 4G network to ensure compatibility and correct operation.

If the device you purchased was advertised as 4G ready to you when you purchased, yet 4G is disabled, then i'd deem this unfit for the advertised purpose at this point in time. Regardless of whether the hardware is capable of it or not, to your average person it does not do as advertised and therefore you should be entitled to remedy via the store you purchased it from, by whatever means appropriate.
If it was not advertised as 4G ready, especially if it was sold for the 2Degrees network, then its functioning as intended and you're simply going to have to wait for 2Degrees to begin launching 4G later this year and the subsequent OTA.

Note its important that you can prove it was advertised as such by the store, I don't believe that your general research and knowledge of the device model in question (rather than the exact capabilities of its variants) are relevant here, but someone might suggest otherwise.
