And it's not something that can be enabled by the user? Is the idea of including it the possibility for it to be enabled via future firmware updates?

EDIT - if it is something either enabled or not by the manufacturer, how can the same phone be supported by one network but not others? Eg, Vodafone clearly lists my phone (Xperia SP) as "HD Voice compatible".

It would depend on the "Carrier Specific" Rom the phone is running as to if it is enabled or not. Same make model different software options based on what the carrier specified, which maybe able to be modified in future updates.

EDIT - Not usually able to be changed by user, sometimes there is a Hack or service menu in which you can enable it but depends.

I noticed HD Voice the other day in a phone call between my Galaxy Nexus and my friend's Nexus 4. The Nexus 4 is on the supported list, but the GNex isn't - suggesting that at least some devices that aren't on the list will support it.

My GNex is running CM11 - not sure if that makes a difference.

Yes, it's possible there are other devices out there that have quietly had support added or enabled without announcing it. I would also think that from a hardware perspective all but the very lowest end smartphones would be capable. You may therefore find you have success with custom ROMs on many devices.

But I guess the main message is that unless your handset is on the supported list - including the firmware variant from whoever you bought it off - then don't expect it to work.

IP interconnects. All the interconnects are currently E1. I think in theory it's possible over E1 (since it uses the same bitrate as normal AMR and I seem to remember that it was a possibility to pack multiple sub-channels into a single 64k stream, though not widely supported in practice) but it's a lot easier with IP interconnect.

What's the motivation for the carriers to do this? Surely they want you to bring all your friends to their network so you can have HD calls :)

More cost than anything else. There's nothing much to gain from a business perspective, but it means a lot of time and money spent.

It's not the same, really. If there is no SMS interconnect then there is no way for a 2degrees subscriber to send an SMS to a Vodafone subscriber or vice versa. This is a direct opportunity cost: revenue that could be earned, is not. In the case of an HD voice interconnect, there is zero (or at least very small, and completely unquantifiable) revenue benefit from spending all the time and money on enabling HD interconnect, because there is already a working voice interconnect.

Even those who think HD voice is the absolute bees knees must concede that voice traffic isn't suddenly going to jump 50% just because there's an HD interconnect. :-)

Just to add to the list of phones that are compatible but not listed as such, I am using a Telecom Branded Huawei Y300 (not rooted or anything) on 2Degrees and it does HD voice fine.

I noticed when I call from an iphone5 with a 2degrees sim into work (who are connected via Orcon SIP) that I get HD voice to the landlines there. I wonder how many other situations are like this, eg would business customers connecting via Vodafone SIP trunking get the same thing to Vodafone mobiles?
