Here I was going to spend the day watching Netflix..
Instead getting plagued by network monitors about sites and servers going up and down!
This is why one leg of a new international cable should really be landed in the south island

Im having major issues with youtube all day.

Videos will not load saying there is a problem or sit buffering for 20+ minutes before starting to play (no internet traffic during this buffering time)

Thumbnails showing up blank etc.

Is anyone else experiencing this? is it related?

Hi All,

Sorry about that, we had a reasonably amount of fibre/power events that happened all at once, mainly affected South Island users, all back to normal though, there are however a number of DSLAM's out there which are without power, or out because of cut fibre.

The NZ - AU congestion may have been a side effect, this should be back to normal

There are 2 major fibre outages in the South Island which we have routed around, both are quite significant and are responsible for a fair amount of disruption. a big thumbs up to the technicians braving the weather to fix these.

Thanks
TheRalph

Thanks for the updates Ralph.  One thing I have noticed switching from Telstraclear/Vodafone to Snap is that Snap do seem to make the conscious effort to inform their customers.  From time to time i would have considerable outages on Vodafone but accessing their website on my mobile phone wouldn't give me any information about what/why/when etc.

Seems unusual that we haven't seen any reports from other ISP's customers if these were the cause of the problem?

I would have expected lots of Telecom, VF, Slingshot, Orcon etc customers to be on here discussing the same issue, but can't see any threads last day or two about it.
Just seems wierd.  Or is it only confined to Snap somehow?

ETA: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=82&topicid=143543  one thread on Orcon which could be related.  But still seems odd that none opf the big guys have any reports on here (especially given they have 5-10 times as many customers as Snap, so would expect it to get picked up much faster

There actually has been, VF/Telstra have had 2 large fibre cuts, Chorus have had many outages due to power loss/fibre issues especially on the West Coast.  Orcon's network on the bottom half of the South Island is completely out for both data and voice and has been all day, other ISP's have also suffered trouble too. but yes not sure why there was not more talk of them, especially Orcon. It may be that Snap's was more intermittent so their users had a chance to post? They also have a larger client base in the South Island where the issues occurred.

It was on the Telecom twitter feed. Assuming other ISP's just ignored it until it went away.

Well I have noticed in BF4 an increase from 38 - 39 ping on average to a 42 - 50 ping to Australian servers.  It really doesn't bother me in the slightest but it is merely an observation.
