I was invited by 2D to participate in the trial. Their selection criteria is "people who use their phones in the target area" - I work there so my phone spends 8+ hours a day on Tory st, just around the corner from Courtenay Pl. I connected it today and it seemed rather slow (speedtest was around 1mb down, 0.06 up) but that may have been low wifi strength rather than backhaul.

Once connected, I turned my wifi off then on again to simulate moving in and out of the coverage area, Phone reconnected immediately, no need to re-authenticate through the captive portal.

Don't forget to delete the network from your saved network list when you are done testing so you don't go hooking up to random networks. I hate the idea of selling or giving away free wifi with all its insecurities but if you are happy opening yourself to really easy mitm attacks then go right ahead.

Such a trial is doomed without Hotspot 2.0 support.

Surely such a typical should be a proof of concept of Hotspot 2.0 - but Citylink don't support that since they for funded by the Council for CBD Free and installed UBNT kit everywhere for that and are slowing upgrading some kit to Ruckus in some areas.

Free wifi over an open network is a way to have your customers details stolen. Sure it may be their fault for using plaintext imap or pop over a non ssl connection but in the eyes of the media it will be the fault of the free wifi. I'm not aware of anyone doing large scale network impersonation and grabbing details in nz yet but I know it is very very common at airports and other places that high value non tech savvy people travel thru.

I'm still recommending to everyone I know to never use free wifi on any device they use for real work as it is not secure and cannot be made secure without obstacles that marketing types do not want to deploy.

I'm starting to regret giving my wifi pineapple away now...

Cant get connected to the hotspot,,,nothing pops up when i try to connect to the 2degrees free wifi.... so willing to try but can test it.....

I'm not a 2degrees customer and just tried connecting to the SSID, and I get the popup. Maybe get closer to an AP? Could be your device? They have a list here that was quoted on the NBR: http://citylink.co.nz/2degreeswifi

it just ended up saved after connecting......and the signal is quite strong..... :( dont know why...

it just ended up saved after connecting......and the signal is quite strong..... :( dont know why...

I have had those auth popups stop working on my up-to-date macbook on cbdfree, turned out I did a permissions repair on the disk and it started working again! Go figure.

i guess the cellphone dosnet work like laptop?
