2degrees is about to begin a WiFi trial in central Wellington, which will give a select group of 2degrees customers unlimited WiFi data for free.
2degrees has partnered with CityLink and will invite around 20,000 Wellington–based 2degrees customers to take part in the three-month trial from today, Thursday June 5th.

2degrees CEO Stewart Sherriff says the partnership is quite different to other existing mobile WiFi offerings in New Zealand.
“This trial gives customers commercial-free WiFi access across a concentrated geographical area of the Wellington CBD rather than just random “hotspots” that people need to be in very close proximity to,” says Mr Sherriff.

“Working with an established provider like CityLink who already has a WiFi presence across the Wellington CBD makes a potential commercial offering a lot easier to establish. If the trial is successful, it has the potential to be used as a blueprint for 2degrees’ WiFi offerings in other parts of the country.

City Link CEO Nick Willis says, “Wi-Fi has matured into a piece of core infrastructure for businesses, transport and event centres, universities, telecommunication companies and cities. CityLink is delighted to be able to provide this scale of Wi-Fi services to 2degrees for their trial.”
“CityLink has the most used Public Wi-Fi in the country on cbdfree Wellington with 75000 unique monthly users, and is best positioned to provide plug and play solutions for high quality Wi-Fi Zones anywhere in New Zealand,” says Mr Willis.

Stewart Sherriff says the trial is a chance to explore the potential benefits WiFi can provide to not only its customers, but also its network.
“With exponential data growth on our network every year, WiFi is becoming a logical option for mobile networks to explore further,” he says.

“Conceptually, we already understand the benefits WiFi can provide, but this trial will give us valuable insight into how it can augment our network, influence data traffic patterns and, most importantly, how it can provide additional value to our customers.” he says.

2degrees customers involved in the trial will be given a password specific to their device which is valid for three months.

2degrees says it expects to make a decision on the viability of WiFi as a commercial service later in the year.

The 2degrees and CityLink WiFi perimeter includes: The Wellington Golden Mile and beyond extending from Courtenay Place, Manners Street, Willis Street, Lambton Quay, Waterloo Quay, Customhouse Quay, Jervois Quay, Cable Street and important landmarks like Westpac Stadium, Wellington Railway Station, Wellington Cable Car Terminals, Wellington Zoo, ASB Sports Centre, TSB Arena.

I read this as a sign that data growth in urban areas (CBDs in particular) is growing faster than 2Deg can install/wants to fund capacity and they are looking at ways to meet demand without huge CapEx...
I'm guessing the 20K subscribers they pick will not be random, but will include some of thier heavy data users,

Every bit that goes viw Wifi is another bit they can onsell to another mobile customer...

Great idea, probably wont roll out and extensively as Telecom can do with the old phone boxes, but great for 2degrees customers.....booo I wasn't selected for the trial though.

I would expect that you would not have to open a specific page to start a session once you connect as current citylink customers do.
If you do, this would very much limit the usefulness of this solution with somewhat cheap data I don't think I'd bother (except for specific use cases, eg, downloading system updates).

interesting perspective.

Anybody used the Citylink wifi. Is it any good?  Will it continue to hold up under the weight of 20k customers using it?

CBD free wifi coverage

vs Telecom WiFi coverage  (you'll need to zoom in to see where the wellington hotspots are.)

I wonder if VF will need to do something like this next to keep up....

Yes, if you have to do anything but connect then it's a PITA and not worth it, for the consumer.

Still not a fan of open/public wifi offerings. Until Hotspot 2.0/EAP-SIM etc become widespread i don't think they are ideal. Not only is data completely sent in the open but it means signing in with a captive portal. Although they are probably remembering the MAC for an extended period so it only has to be done once.
It only takes one person's [insert account here] being hijacked on one of these networks for the media to cook up a storm about it. Until then everyone i assume the majority blissfully unaware that their data is being sent unsecured.

On a side note, last time i used CBDFree the speed didn't seem too bad, and all i had to do was click a sponsors logo to start my session. Given the coverage footprint is similar, what does this give me over that? More speed?

And what a great way to test viability to launch the "WiFi Calling" that IOS8 will apparently support too! :D

The invite says:

Step 2 Select '2degrees' from the list of available networks. You'll then be taken to a web page to register.

Step 3 Register with your unique code: XXXXXXXXXXXXX

You should now be connected to the 2degrees WiFi network, and will connect automatically from now on until the end of the 3 month trial. You'll also be automatically registered on the cbdfree WiFi network.

I haven't tried it yet, but the implication is that you don't have to click through anything after initial registration.

They also offer additional codes for other devices and say they'll send you a survey about it at the end of the trial.

EAP-SIM/EAP-AKA would make this more interesting.  Although, do phones (etc) actually support it?

It's "2degrees". Same APs as CBDFree though.

I find CBDfree useful if I'm sitting down to use it for at least a few minutes but as others have pointed out it's too much hassle to connect to it for the sake of a quick glance at your phone. Removing this barrier would be fantastic.

I find the existing wifi product provided by citylink is pants. This will only result in more dissatisfied customers.

This is their coverage map for both cbdfree and the 2degrees trial: http://citylink.co.nz/2degreeswifi quite different to the very old map NonprayingMantis posted above.

As above I've found CBD Free to be pants the half a dozen times I've used it. TradeMe waterfront WiFi on the other hand has been excellent.

But I'm all for product/service innovation.
