EvilMonkey:
FlameBeard: Its probably worth mentioning too that the low ping from Fibre can only been seen and guaranteed within our network. Outside of our own network we cannot guarantee you the low ping times that you would see nationally. That's just not going to happen.

Seeing as you're going to the other side of the world, chances are you're taking the same path over there from our network, when you were on DSL that you are now that you're on fibre. Why it was lower on DSL we couldn't really tell you, perhaps you were even taking another route over for one reason or another. For Australian servers we might be able to provide some manipulation there, might.
How on earth you play with 180 ping though is beyond me, I normally get about 33/66ms when I play Dota, on an Australian server, anything higher than 100/120 is a pita, for me at least.

Someone also posted here about the ping time increasing on the second hop of the trace route. Probably worth mentioning again that ICMP traffic is de-prioritised on our core network, so expect some increase there.

Is really frustrating when someone gets an idea then everyone else runs with it.  I do not have a problem with how high or low my ping is.

There is some instability causing small spikes making games unplayable,  I am also getting it in other games.

I am not sure if it is a problem on local trafic servers as my ping is so low a small spike would probably not make much difference.  I will do some more testing.

Then I think if the problem only manifests itself as a defect within the game but doesn't have a signature via ping, tracert etc then it is something that is going to be impossible to troubleshoot further.

Other posters have reported getting it on other carriers - which points to it being outside NZ, you report it on other games, which points to it being a common factor in your setup/connection - there just isn't a pattern to work with here - it could even be a game server issue.

Sounds like the same issue I have.

Issues with frequent spikes and rubberbanding in multiple games on orcon unlimited ADSL.
Even the Orcon TF2 servers have this issue. Ping is fine just get very frequent packetloss which makes FPS games unplayable.
Seems to only happen after 6pm and stops about midnight.
I have a case open with Orcon but they have said there is enough bandwidth and cant see anything wrong.
Orcon are installing a master splitter to rule out any internal issue but I doubt this will fix the issue.

I play with friends on other networks and they don't have the same issues.

Yep we have enough bandwidth in all directions, we aren't constrained anywhere that might lead to this kind of issue.

Pingplotter could be useful here as it can ping and trace simultaneously, and show each hops results in a graph.
If you run this in the background while playing and experience the issue, you may be able to narrow down where in the path its happening.

You presumably mean those hosted at games.orcon.net.nz?

PMed my account number.
I have the same issue playing TF2 on games.orcon.net.nz servers.
Also have issue playing CSGO on AU servers.
Only happens from about 7pm onwards. Can play all day and not have a single problem.

Which other posters have the same issue as me?  If you are referring to Jase, he is on DSL playing a different game with a different issue.  And the other posters are complaining about other games but only on orcon and in NZ,  not really the same thing :P.

You must be skipping over posts because I clearly mentioned several times that I have an ADSL (as well as Fibre) connection with Telecom and I play with friends on various  other ADSL connections.  None of us has any issues what so ever when on my or their DSL's.  I can switch between the two in around 10 seconds, which is fast enough that I don't lose connection to my game.  No issues on my DSL, issues on my Fibre.

I have run pings and Traces along side the game and I get the same variance in ping.  Though the traces are not the same each day.

I will have to do more testing.

How do you switch between the two circuits?

I'm not skipping posts but a pattern from your point of view involving a few friends isn't always the same when looked at from the network core perspective with a whole user-base to look at, especially when there are no other indications of packet loss or latency with your UFB connection under non-game use.

You should def check your network, there has been an exponential jump in upload vs download on your fibre circuit - that can be a prime cause of latency spikes, so far today you have done 45GB up, 10GB down...high usage isn't a problem but it can impact gaming as I'm sure you are aware...

So been playing some games on AU servers today with no issues.
Probably play for the rest of the day and will see what happens at 7pm...

So I think we now have two completely separate issues, originally in two threads, now quite confused. Your issue looks like a localized congestion issue that we are working on. It isn't circuit type related at all.

Doesn't look like a DNS reflection attack or anything so suspect seeding going on - you might want to check if that is from the same gaming machine either intentionally or unintentionally....
