I could be wrong, but one company with terrible customer service buying another company with bad customer service sounds pretty grim.

I have never had any problems with Orcons CS :)

When I was with them, they had trouble stopping my billing. But thanks to Geekzone, I had read about this problem before it happened and for the last few months paid by Prezzie Visa card.

Well, as has been stated before, I'm a fairly happy Orcon customer, and I've never had any particular bad issues with their Customer Services either. The last couple of interactions (including a fairly obscure TechSupport issue) were dealt with promptly and efficiently - they even (accidently) disconnected my call part way through and immediately rang back on my cellphone to continue to resolve the issue. Kudos.

I am NOT a Sky customer - I don't have any particular interest in watching a gazillion channels of TV, and almost all Sky deals and bundles seem to revolve around Sports, which is not an interest; and am almost 100% unlikely to ever subscribe to Sky in it's current form.

However, should "Skycon" offer the option of taking selected channels via by existing broadband connection (for a monthly fee), then yes, I'd probably be interested. Assuming they were smart enough to make it $x/channel, select whatever channel(s) you like, and offer bundles of certain channels for a discount, then I think they could gain additional customers that way.

(That's a Hint if this post ever crosses the desk of a manager senior enough to do something clever with it!)

you mean dumb enough, right? If they did that, the profitability of Sky would evaporate and it wouldn't matter how many customers they got.

I'm not sure how you think Sky have "wrecked" broadcast TV?

FTA broadcasting is kind of a slowly declining industry around the world, with pay TV and streaming services taking bites out of the advertiser base that they depend on selling to advertisers. But, the trouble is, many people don't want to suffer ads in their films and sports matches. Other than offering stiff competition for viewers and programme rights, I'm not sure it's as simple as laying the state of broadcast TV exclusively at Sky's door. Also, in NZ, FTA TV has always been pretty appalling - with shows offered years after the rest of the world etc.

Sky oubid's the FTA channels for the rights to anything that becomes popular on FTA. Think the Olympics, Rugby, V8 super cars, Mythbusters etc.

Many kiwis are parting with good cash to view TV they could previously view for free. If Kiwi's refused to pay sky, then it would crumble and all the good shows would return to FTA TV.

I think it is quite likely sky would buy an ISP like Orcon. Maybe that was another reason for dropping dot com advertising campaign. Sky really need to be in the online space in the future.

I think it's much more likely that, the programming you are referring to, just wouldn't show here AT ALL.

I will be watching this space with interest. I would have expected 2Degrees to pick up fixed line broad band at some point in order to capture the more lucrative business market. , which seems to splash out cash lapping up the no-thinking-required, all-in-one packages.

I think it will be good for Orcons future for sky to buy it, as they are one of the more valuable companies on the stock exchange, so potentially have more money to pump into it. I would prefer sky to buy it than another ISP, which will reduce competition.

Generally, I'm fairly neutral, but if I was forced to give an opinion I'd much sooner a company like 2degrees taking over Orcon than Sky (i.e. the previous rumour/conjecture thread) simply because the no loss-of-competition argument technically still applies and technically to a greater point because it still encourages Sky to play fair with multiple ISPs in a multi-tech/multi-LFC/multi-ISP country (Personally I hate the Com Com more than companies not playing fair in the first place ;)).

There seems to be a lot of cloak and daggers (or media playing connect the dots) on the subject, so I'm ready to hear anything. Although seeing Orcon with Sky style advertising in a year or two would certainly be a bit a shock to the system wouldn't it - especially after the KDC ads.
