Same here, I get great HD streaming over Snap /Unblock-US using the stock Chromecast.

Interesting. I suspect the Chromecast will be running at a lesser bitrate than the Windows 8 app

Same performance with unblock-us, stream comes from Orlando at ~10mbit

Astrill appears to be the best option when connected to the LA VPN server

Perhaps if the unblocking services made you appear as LA user instead, performance might be better?

I'm not sure location matters with Netflix

It's down to peering, type of application being used etc etc

To see if Snap would look into it I raised a ticket, but was told that they would not do anything as they/the CSR consider bypassing geoblocked content copyright violation

I'm on Snap UFB and have no issues with Netflix on AppleTV - hits Super HD after about 20 seconds max and stays there.

Is that fair to Snap? Surely if you're using a VPN you're passing your DNS requests through that VPN rather than external to the tunnel i.e. locally? Therefore, it shouldn't matter on the routes that Snap has to the SuperHD enabled server locations, but rather the routes to the where you're terminating your VPN.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I've not used this service you're talking about but just commenting from a general perspective. If you terminate the VPN in Orlando or Atlanta, i.e. you can choose your VPN endpoint then perhaps this statement would be more accurate. Otherwise, if your VPN service just terminates somewhere in the USA that isn't Orlando or Atlanta then Snap's routes wouldn't have any bearing on this issue as they're just getting your traffic to your VPN provider.

Something else to consider, although perhaps not an issue either as someone posting that uses Snap UFB has not got this same issue, is that when you're using a VPN provide (and I understand why you are for this) all your traffic is being proxied by their service. If their pipe/s aren't (this was the edit... I'd put "are") large enough to support the number of concurrent connections then the service will appear degraded.

As a quick suggestion to the OP, I'd check your DNS is passing through your tunnel to give you the "best" VPN experience. Rather than having your DNS resolve somewhere locally external of your VPN and all your traffic to Netflix going through the tunnel (when resolved by your DNS).

If your DNS is going through your tunnel then great. Log into the other VPN service you mentioned that works ~24Mbps and check the DNS servers you're being assigned - assuming your being assigned any? Quite often you won't be, you'll just be given a local port that all traffic is tunnel through by an application hosted locally that intercepts your port 80/443 traffic and fires it off down the VPN. If that's the case - you're DNS is probably going through the tunnel and then back to your DNS provider (assuming local? ISP in NZ?). Second edit... is this ==> I got lost on my point but if you get assigned DNS from that other VPN provider try specifying those same DNS servers in your VPN provider that you're having the slower experience with.

Sorry - I'm tired after a late night working last night and not much sleep this morning. Hopefully I've given you something to think about though. Happy to field more questions on it if I've not been clear :)

I've just tried switching to Getflix from Unblock-US. Not for performance reasons - I was happy, but for it being half the price of Unblock-US. Seems to be working just as well. Noticeably faster browsing on the Apple TV, video seems no different

I wonder if said CSR also considers parallel importing DVDs "copyright violation" too?

Has anyone else had terrible Netfix this afternoon.

Mine is normally HD after a few seconds but today its not even close to SD, almost un watchable via Xbox One. Seems odd on UFB that its doing that.
