A5X: Not that I believe I am, Slingshot have had a habit of keeping us on a contact from the last 7 years even though we should have been. They really like to add us onto a contact at plan changes, or when a product ends "grand father plan" and then force us onto a new one, and give us a contract we didn't know we were put on. I have asked this before, and they have said no you will no be on another contract only to find out we are again. Only reason I haven't move is wife is old skool and needs a old style landline (I don't personally car about) and she is heavily tied into her slingshot email and can manage free email providers even if I try and swing her over to it.

What is an approved VDSL install. Would you recommend moving to Orcon, seen a advert on TV say they don't throttle their customers.

if your looking to move, ild go snap.

They are solid, and include an installation. Not the cheapest, but 100% worth it IMO.

otherwise bigpipe and see if you can get coffeebaron to sort you out? (assuming your in auckland)

An "approved" VDSL install, as provided by almost all ISPs except BigPipe, includes a VDSL master filter at the external termination point (ETP) and a fresh run of Cat6 cable to a dedicated VDSL jackpoint.
The old phone wiring stays on the "other side" of the filter.

I moved from Slingshot (ADSL) to Orcon (ADSL, then VDSL) several years ago, and was very happy with the result.
The Orcon VDSL install was as described above.
Orcon did NOT throttle.
The Orcon VoIP phone worked well.

I have now upgraded to Vodafone cable, so I can't comment about Orcon's recent performance.

I have run a new short RJ11 cable, new filter/splitter, and new quality CAT5e to my R7000 in the next room. Effectively there isn't any bad links remaining (if any) for the modem. There not much change to the stats when compared, Line Attenuation is half the value. Unfortunately I cannot go any faster than 15 Mbps using slingshot speed test (I do all my test from wired PC). I would expect the downloads to be the same peak. Certainly look like there is more in the tank but being held back.

Can provide comment on Orcon's performance.
As an ADSL customer x2 and a VDSL customer they are literally fantastic. Also their supplied modem works a treat too.
Would recommend.

Can also recommend Bigpipe as well if you want to stay ADSL but IMO if you're looking for speed, going VDSL and with another provider that can do an approved install is worth changing.

to be fair, the above post from the OP would infer he does not have an issue doing wiring himself.

he could install a splitter and have things solid.

Its pretty clear from his descrition and current stats that his wiring is sweet.
With every other ISP apart from Bigpipe he would be paying for a filter he doesn't need.  That's $200 built into the cost of his plan that he doesn't need to pay.

Not sure what you mean. I can do the wiring myself? What wiring exactly do I need to do, if so I should be able to work it out given what is required? Or is it the wiring I have, judging on the stats from the ADSL modem, I should be able to buy my own VDSL modem and just switch over to a different provider? If there is a free installation and VDSL modem anyway, shouldn't I just take it?

"There's no such thing as a free lunch."

Most ISPs (other than BigPipe) will give you a "free" install (filter + wiring) and VDSL modem router.
"Free" (actually about $200+) is factored into what the ISP charges every month, usually under contract.
Most people will be better off just getting the "free" package deal.

Your options:

1. If you want ADSL without throttling, just change your ISP - no rewiring required in your case.
2. If you want VDSL without the hassle of doing your own rewiring, go with Orcon or another ISP.
3. If you want VDSL and want to do your own rewiring, buy your own modem, and can live without a landline, BigPipe is a good cheap option.

I would suggest option 2.

I mean that, based on the fact you get basically perfect ADSL sync, your wiring is fine and probably doesn't need any changes to get a good VDSL experience.
Dumping $200 into a splitter (whether directly or just paying more for your monthly charge) might net you a few Mbps, maybe.  But we're talking the difference between, say, 60Mbps and 65Mbps - which is barely material and for most people and not even noticable.

Also, If you opt to not get one, then it turns our magically that your wiring is terrible somehow, you can probably do it yourself
This bit of your previous poist
"I have run a new short RJ11 cable, new filter/splitter, and new quality CAT5e to my R7000 in the next room"

suggests that you have at least a basic understanding of wiring, which is all that is needed to install a splitter yourself.  You'll probably do a better job than the average Chorus tech at any rate.

Thanks for the options, they are all good ones, I think if I changed then would be VDSL.

I certainly notice a change over the last 2 weeks. I figured might of been my gear playing up, so I attempted to adjust my set, really by trying out a Draytek and TP-Link ADSL modem's. If anyone was to look at my line speed, then would it be safe to say Slingshot are throttling there so called "Full Speed ADSL".

Hey OP,

We don't throttle any of our plans (unless something's changed and no one's told me which I doubt). You really don't seem to be getting as fast as I think you should though. I'd be happy to look at doing a VDSL deal for you if you want to flick me a message with your account number.

Cheers,
Chris

um from here.

6. Broadband Services

6.3 If you are on an “uncapped” or “unlimited” plan the total amount of data you can upload or download is unlimited. We may use traffic prioritisation policies for these plans and our capped plans at any time to improve the overall performance amongst our customers. Other factors may influence the particular speeds or latency you can achieve to servers nationally and internationally. Our control of these speeds is limited to our own network. Connections to servers outside our network are on a “best effort” basis. It may not be possible for you to achieve your desired or expected speeds or latency where you are connecting to equipment outside our control.

Says you do "throttle" (ie prioritisation) your unlimited plans.

and since I've just changed from a old 50gig plan, to a unlimited plan I've also noticed a HUGE decrease in "speed" since the 26th.

even though my connect rate is still the same.

The prominent part of that paragraph is "May use traffic prioritisation", it is definitely not saying that they do (and they have even advised that above)

Most company's that don't throttle on unlimited will still reserve the right to.
For example Orcon don't throttle but still reserve the right to in certain situations  (https://www.orcon.net.nz/support/gfaq_page/how_unlimited_is_the_unlimited_plan)

If you go through a few more providers terms and conditions I'm sure you would find the same sort of things worded one way or another.
