BMarquis:
linw: Interesting about not rebooting the ONT. I would hazard that many help desk pers have that on their crib sheet. Certainly, the Orcon help desk told me to reboot the ONT when I had an authentication  problem a couple of days ago. Pretty easy to see a normal LED pattern on the ONT and mine was certainly normal.

Essentially, as long as the Chorus ONT has a green PON LED and not a red update LED, I'd be 99.99% confident the ONT is fine, and that there aren't any issues that rebooting the ONT would resolve.
The thing I have seen an ONT reboot fix, was the ethernet status change that it caused on the RGW triggering a new PPPOE or DHCP session on the RGW - so an RGW reboot would have also resolved it and the problem was not caused by the ONT.

Are any bad things likely to happen if an ONT is rebooted? Reason I ask is because almost no one has their ONTs connected to a UPS. And what about just needing to do things like switch off the mains to the house? Also those people who like to switch everything off at the wall the minute they stop using it?

No, bad things wont happen - unless the ONT is in the middle of updating when 1) it is first installed or 2) when we upgrade them during outage windows in the small hours of the night - then there is a small chance of bricking the ONT.

The ONT being off affects our ability to monitor the PON network performance, service performance, etc.
If there are issues which require an ONT reboot, I'd rather it was complained about by customers rather than reboots being done - so we can fix the root cause of the issue.  As mentioned, we haven't come across anything like this yet (touch wood!)
It also makes it impossible for us to upgrade and check all is OK afterwards if the ONT is off when we perform an upgrade.
