I of course checked out all the terms and conditions at the time and was surprised that there was no out clause or loop hole for them which is what made the deal really cool and worth taking up.

You get your own sub-domain name which identifies your site and you can to your friends, a whopping 10Mb of disk space, inclusion in our member's website directory and more. All for free!
LMAO you are moaning about losing a 10Mb free website?

However in terms of the lifetime issue. In this case i imagine it was billed as Free for the lifetime of the product. not free for your lifetime. I have never come across a company giving a product Free for the consumers lifetime

Also:
The ISP reserves the right to modify the Terms and Conditions, the services or the fees charged for any of its services at any time. The ISP will give existing customers at least 30 days notices of any changes to its Terms and Conditions by sending an email message to their email address as recorded on file.

Not interested in what you imagine and like I already said of course it would have to be the lifetime of the company, can't provide a service if they no longer exist. Jeez if you can't be bothered thinking why bother typing?

I assume this doesn't apply to the "lifetime" use of @orcon.net.nz email addresses?  That was a genius marketing move and when I recently changed ISPs I did confirm over the phone that I could keep my email address under the "yours for life" policy.  I was told yes I could but that was about six months ago now.

But what does't 'yours for life' mean. As life refers to living, which refers to animate objects, I presume it would be the person who signed up.

If the OP is concerned about the way it was advertised, and feel they were misled, there are government authorities to contact.

If it were the life time of the company, which I doubt then you have answered the question. The Orcon you signed with no longer exists as it has new owners.

It would depend on how the company was purchased. In normal cases, the new owners would have purchased all assets and liabilities along with the company etc, so the fact that it has been purchased a few times and undergone ownership changes shouldn't make any difference. Otherwise companies would just keep selling to shell companies to get out of any liabilities they may have.

I would expect Orcon to keep providing it for the lifetime of the person, unless the company goes broke, or stops providing any webhosting services at all (not just free ones).

Thanks Mattwnz for explaining to the loud but ignorant ones that kept repeating the same incorrect assumption about what new owners mean , I couldn't be bothered.

Yeah no mention of that, I think a lot more people would care about that.

I used to use the free hosting site as a storage space for family photos and things, but I haven't really used it much now there are more alternatives around with larger webspace (Picasaweb, for example). Happy to move my files off the server, I just need my FTP password reset...I have e-mailed their technical support team last week but heard nothing...how long do they normally take to reply?

As to the free e-mail address, that's a different matter entirely and I hope that one stays - I use that daily. It would be a pain if they got rid of that, but it is a free service, after all.

Give them a call on their 0800 number, as it is far more effective in getting support.

Tried today during business hours, waited on hold for 10 minutes on their Business support line but no one picked up and I had to go...does anyone from Orcon read/post on here? I just need my FTP password reset, nothing else.

Did you phone 0800 14 36 36, as that is one of their hosting numbers?
