Many years ago orcon offered lifetime free websitehosting accounts but somehow that lifetime has run out as they have announced they are discontinuing this service and there is no free alternative. No explanation as to why they can discontinue a lifetime service now.

What will be and why not mention it if that is the case, it would be usual for them to refer to the related terms and conditions if there were one.

They have been sold twice in the last few years, can't really expect a company that has had 2 new owners to keep offering something for free for "life time".
Stop being cheap and find a new host :P  Lots around that still offer "free" or a small monthly fee.

One more thing. Everyone goes on about lifetime warrantys and lifetime 'deals' like this. People need to realize that 99% of the time its not YOUR lifetime. Its the lifetime of the PRODUCT. So when a product is no longer manufactured, that is deemed the end of the products life. In this case it might have been the lifetime of the server, or the useful lifetime of the technology (imagine it was a usenet, or even gopher server/relay).

The excuse was in the notification email.

Legacy system it's running on and lack of support/security upgrades for the platform. Find that kind of.. odd, However that was the justification.

And as above.. Lifetime ain't forever :( RAM 'lifetime' warranty.. expected tech lifetime. 3-5yrs before being dropped

All to often a "lifetime warranty" means "until it breaks"  undecided

A lot of jumping to conclusions there I think because if the discontinuation meets orcons obligations then I would expect them to state exactly that with reference to the original terms and conditions that this action meets, on the other hand if it does not they may simply try to fob people off with a lame scare tactic about security and how discontinuing is just doing us a favor.
A couple of posters here need to think before they play their records or is this just any excuse to ride their hobbyhorse againwink.

Lifetime of what. Many (most) lifetime warranties, services etc. are for the life of the product only. If you can prove this is not the case then you have an argument, otherwise, move on.

Your missing the point, if orcon didn't think they were violating the standing agreement then why not be clear about it, or I suppose it could be just some no thinking slacker in charge of this action which some people here seem to have no trouble relating to.

I'm not arguing what maybe the case with other lifetime agreements, I'm talking specifically about orcons so don't know why people insist on generalizing.

Government legislation though overruled that, so not really a good example. Prviate contracts between a person or business though are different.

In this case it was a 100% free service, so I can't really see a problem with them cancelling it. It is no different from google cancelling their services, such as RSS etc. If it was a paid service that you initially paid an upfront fee for, and you have documentation to show it was really a lifetime product, then that would be a different situation. I had an account with this many many years ago on the free orcon hosting platform, and originally it was adfree, but some time ago they put ads on it. It also wasn't that reliable from my experience. But anything that is free like that isn't going to be sustainable longterm, unless it is making money.

You are yet to prove the deal you signed for wasn't "lifetime of the product". Come back with proof, or get off the soapbox.

For those that a chiming in with an opinion on something they are obviously not familiar with orcon some years ago gave lifetime free hosting accounts that was made absolutely clear was something that would be lifetime as long as orcon was still around, there were no limitations put on it.
By the lack of informed response here it looks like I maybe one of the last people still using this service which is probably why they thought they could just switch it off now as they thought maybe nobody would really care.

I still have an account, but haven't been contacted about it. But where are the terms you refer to? You will likely find that they mention that the service maybe cancelled at anytime, and that they can change the conditions at any time.

I did find this page about it, but can't see any terms http://web.archive.org/web/20030210143139/http://www.orcon.net.nz/
