insane: I suspect they do this knowing that it will take a few weeks for anyone to complain about the ads, and a few more before anyone will do something about it.

Hopefully something truly awful will happen to them, like getting bought out by Vodafone.

That would be cruel and unnatural punishment  smile

Indeed :)

I'd settle for them having to run an ad campaign and state that they are the 5th best or second to worst or whatever they actually are. I don't think any company should be able to make broad claims like that without having the hard evidence to back it up.

It might work.  smile
In Days of Old when tobacco advertising was legal, one Big Tobacco company compared its product with "Brand X".
One enterprising company started producing "Brand X" cigarettes, and they sold very well - before the novelty wore off.

I'll just make sure I never sign up with an ISP claiming to the the fastest or best.. dirty deceiving tactics.

My only issue with them is that they can cherrypick their customers by only offering services in the most profitable broadband areas, which are those that only offer fibre. It is also a problem if you do use them, because if you have to move to somewhere that doesn't provide fibre, and are still in contract, you could face a big contract break fee.   But if you chose a provider that does both fibre and ADSL, you can just move from a fibre plan to the equivalent adsl plan, which are usally the same price.  That is why I had to take them off my shortlist of providers to use.

Much like how the Radio Hauraki Breakfast show advertise as the 13th most popular breakfast show.

sbiddle: We can argue about technicalities all day when it comes to these tests, but I too draw the conclusion that neither MR nor Orcon can really lay any claims to be the "fastest".

Ookla testing in particular is particularly prone to problems - just look at Vodafone's supposed (according to Spark) doctoring of mobile results for both networks to put Vodafone up, and Spark down.

I also agree that both MR and Orcon aren't the fastest and I don't just say that due to my issues I've had previously with them but anyone with real sense will check truenet results and shop around and they'll easily find out there are better ISPs.

Please note that as soon as Ookla became aware of MyRepublic's campaign, they were served a warning to immediately cease and desist all aspects of the campaign pertaining to Ookla. Their campaign represents a blatant violation of our terms of use as well as trademark violations.

They have also been informed that the methodologies employed on Net Index were never intended to be used for commercial purposes and are protected from such misuse within the language of our terms. We make every effort to prevent such violations and as such, we have removed New Zealand data from Net Index.

So that's why the NetIndex is missing NZ data
