NBR confirmed what I posted last night, Global Mode gone as of 1st September.

I don't think it's the end of the world for consumers now that Netflix NZ is live and growing in content every other week.

Most of our customers transitioned over and we see little traffic to the Netflix US servers now.

Bibbidybob: They haven't been very thorough - https://help.slingshot.co.nz/About-Us/44640964/What-are-Slingshot-s-DNS-addresses.htm still mentions Global Mode, but the link is broken

Could be worse. Could have done a find/replace for it and ended up with something like sparccommunications.

Oh wait..

NonprayingMantis:
asjohnstone: There really needs to be some user comms around this, after they were so public in their stance that it was completely legal, they can't just pull it silently.

If a judgement has gone against them it's a major blow for internet freedom in NZ

pretty sure it won't be any judgement,  the trial doesn't start for ages and we would surely have seen an announcement if there was any injunction or similar, instead of complete radio silence (although maybe something will be forthcoming tomorrow)

turns out I was wrong.

Case has been settled out of court.

I guess Callplus got some better legal advice and realised they were in the wrong.

If they were so sure they were right, as they have previously stated, then they would definitely have been better off drawing it out - the PR benefits from a lengthy legal battle would have hugely outweighed the costs, and they would be seen to be fighting for the 'people'

As it is now,  they just look weak, folding very shortly after stating they would not.

As for the 'bullying' allegations,  I don't really think that can be true.   Callplus have always been willing to fight Telecom on various regulatory matters, and they aren't exactly a small company.  Not only that, but they are now owned by M2, which has a market cap of $2bn.  You can't really 'bully' a company that size.   If they wanted to actually fight it in court, they easily could afford it.

It is official now. Please continue in the existing, generic GlobalMode discussion.
