As i said I have not read the doco yet - the main reason I went for this switch was that I could combine gigabit ethernet connections via pooling - if I need a separate router - I'm sure in my insane amount of equipment I'll have one, I thought from the initial description I read though that this switch could be connected directly to the internet and thus it did routing, but if it doesn't it's no big it's not what I originally purchased it for ( very cheaply I might note ) anyway it was to get two and four pair ( if possible ) gigabit cabling running around the house which I have the hardware for.

Well there you go - just learned WebSmart is an advertising term meaning - Has a web interface for management :)

But it does do connection pooling which is what I brought it for - So that's not a big ill just shove a router in front of it so it will handle combining cables together for higher transfer rates which was the original intended purpose so that's cool. :) even working with IT stuff as long as I have I learn something new everyday.

VDSL won't get to 100Mb, so FE would be fine on the modem.

ONT/VDSL modem - WAN port on AC3200 - LAN port on AC3200 to switch - ports on switch to clients. Wireless clients connecting to AC3200.

To me the above setup sounds like what you're after. Set the AC3200 to terminate the session with your ISP, provide DHCP, etc. WAN port on AC3200 connects to either an ONT or VDSL modem depending on your connection. The AC3200 will do all heavy lifting. Client devices can connect to the AC3200 through its wireless, LAN ports or the ports on the switch.

Regarding the Fritzbox you can set this to connect through an existing internet connection and hook it up to either a LAN port on the AC3200 or your switch. It can then do VOIP/DECT.

What are you planning to bond?

I don't understand why you're even wanting to buy any additional hardware. You already own a Fritzbox which will do everything you want and be far better at it.

I don't understand why you're even wanting to buy any additional hardware. You already own a Fritzbox which will do everything you want and be far better at it.

Okay I just realized I pointed at the wrong doco - two switches with very similar names its actually a layer 3+ switch.
While I am aware the Fritzbox 7490 does everything that can also be it's downfall at minimum I - if I continue to use the fritz for VDSL will probably use it for just VDSL and DECT or at best just dect.
I have always preferred separate boxes for everything as I have found that boxes are usually under powered for the tasks required because they try and do to much - as for bonding as you call it i presume you are referring to 802.3ad link aggregation I have PC's that support this and I do transfer a lot of data around sometimes with upgrading hardware etc, personally I have a 12tb raid array on my main PC and need to back up additions and changes quite often to my nas which also supports aggregation or my 2nd and 3rd PC's once I can finally get everything up and running next year.
I have a room full of computers I can't use at the moment + a network enabled oscilloscope a PCB router and various other bits of equipment I simply cant use because I have a 4x3m space to put it all in, next year my area will be setup by converting our dual vehicle garage which we can't put our vehicle in because it's two high into my office space and ill have 36m2 to setup all my computers and electronic equipment. I have many many PC's including network enabled Commodore Amiga's ( Origional systems ) and an amiga X1000 - the latest Amiga, a Fraken mac or at least it will be, my PCB Routing PC, my BGA IRDA repair equipment the list could go on and on but it comes down to only being able to use my ASUS G751GY gaming rig at the moment and not being able to continue with the masses of projects I've got going both hardware and software through lack of room.

I still don't understand why you're so adverse to using the Fritzbox you already have. Buying additional hardware is not going to make your setup any better.

You basically have three choices - use the Fritzbox as your modem and router (best option). Buy a Draytek as a VDSL2 modem and use the Fritzbox as a router or buy a Draytek as VDSL2 modem and use the AC3200 as your router. I wouldn't use the Draytek as your router as well because both of the routers you already own are far better devices.

I completely agree with this.

I understand your lack of desire to use the Fritzbox as well though. My modem, router and VOIP adapter (Fritzbox) are separate.

Just like to add a +1 to the flaw in your role separation theory. Separating roles can be fine in theory but the way that you are doing it doesn't make sense.

For Wireless a separate AP is fine. And a lot of people do this because they get an AP only without other capabilities. But handling wireless is not actually that taxing, theres a specialist chipset in all devices which do wireless, that handles the specific functions for it. Not that much goes on the general CPU.

For Switching, a separate switch is again fine for having high speed with lots of ports and a high speed backplane always helps. But again, switching isn't that much load on the CPU of an all in one. A specialized chipset handles all switching.

For Modem/Router/NAT/DHCP - This is where the processing power is needed because you begin to work on layer3 and above and it uses the general purpose CPU. Using the Vigor 130 for this wouldn't make sense because then it's doing all the real work and its processor is weak. You could bridge it, which takes the load off it, but then there was no point in getting it and you may as well have used the 7490 anyway.

You have two powerful devices - use them. The R8000 is extremely capable as is the 7490. My advice is use the 7490 as your all in one modem, router and gateway, and continue to use the R8000 for a secondary access point to increase wireless coverage.

I can pump a couple of thousand simultaneous TCP connections through the 7490 with 200mbps+ of throughput without a hitch. It could probably handle more too.
