Chorus guy just called.  Pleasant surprise, didn't expect them to be working weekends.  He had no idea if i was on VDSL or ADSL but said the problem was 'further down the line somewhere'.  What ever he did has done the job, now on VDSL and speedtest shows i've been allocated a slingshot owned IP now.

Downstream Upstream

SNR Margin (0.1dB): 9.1 9.5

Attenuation (0.1dB): 21.6 5.8

Output Power (dBm): 18.8 3.1

Attainable Rate (Kbps): 20952 1185

Rate (Kbps): 16434 1155

D (interleave depth): 121 10

Delay (msec): 7.93 7.22

Speedtest shows 15 down 1.1 up.  I'm now back to the speeds i was getting 6 months ago on this line with ADSL2!  About 6 month ago some chorus guys were in the grey post, said they were fixing up the internet connection for the people across the road.  After that my sync speed dropped from 16 down to 13.

Unacceptable. undecided

These speeds are typical of an ADSL connection - as you have said.

With VDSL you should expect at least 15Mbps downstream and 5Mbps upstream.

Either there has been a provisioning error &/or you NEED a master filter - which should have been provided in the first place.

If you can't get better speeds WITH a master filter, you should go back to ADSL without penalty to you - there's no point in paying extra for nothing extra.

There are no mimimum specs for VDSL2. 15/5 used to be the minimum but is no longer the case. With the change from 997 to 998 a lot of people are finding downloads speeds increase and upload decrease depending on the quality of the line and it is not uncommon to see VDSL2 upload speeds well under 5Mbps - there have been quite a few posts on here lately who are only getting around 1Mbps.

A master filter is no longer provided as standard unless the ISP requests it, and some now aren't to save costs. Typically these are the low costs providers who can only offer the prices they do by saving the monthly fee to Chorus for the master filter.

Hows it work with DLM if i did a master filter install. Would my speed go up straight away or would it take time for DLM to decide my line was now capable of going higher?

I have no personal experience with this (because I've always had a master filter installed), but theoretically the speed increase would not be immediate - it may take up to 10 days to improve.

short of having a port reset DLM will do its thing the slow way.

but the disconnect you need for installing the master filter will cause the modem to have to reconnect and it should, if the line if of better quality connect at a higher speed. If the line is similar to what it already was (ie master filter hasnt really done anything, which is always possible) thenyou will still see the same speed.

Pretty sure i'll get a boost.  Last night I installed a 'master' splitter at the old 6 way junction box in the middle of my house where the thick copper pair terminates and  most of the extensions are wired in, giving a star type configuration.  It added 50% to my upstream (to 1.5Mb) and gave a small boost to the downstream.  However at some point someone has split the link upstream as there's one jackpoint that works even when i disconnect the main junction box, and there's an old alarm that's has a phone connection so that's no doubt been wired in upstream of the main junction box.  In short, i really need a proper master filter install from the ETP, and as it seems slingshots not going to do it, i'll have to fork out myself.

I reckon 26db attenuation is very high for 800m from the exchange. on our street the house two houses further away from the exchange gets 27mbps, and about 10 houses closer is on 31.  We don't get Fibre for another 3 years so it's a small price to pay if I get a significant speed boost.

Alarms kill VDSL.

Yes, you do need a proper master filter install from the ETP.

Before paying for this yourself, why not ask Slingshot to do it - because your existing connection is so poor. They won't do it if you don't ask - you have nothing to lose by asking.

So spoke to slingshot today. Apparently my speed will improve after the 10 days is over.  Asked about master filter/splitter and it their advice is that they don't help with speed at all and are mainly for resolving issues with crackling on the landline.

should have highlighted the whole paragraph :)

DLM is not as aggressive as it use to be  due to the fact you start on the best profile and go backwards as opposed to what it used be, starting on a safe profile and going forwards. so most wont see much of a change from DLM doing its thing. The key is to not restart your gear.

Many people seem to believe that DLM will magically make a poor line a lot faster. This is not the case.

The main real world benefit/purpose of DLM is to ensure you have the best possible connection, and to move to/from 8MHz and 17Mhz profiles depending on line conditions.

I suspect that rather than ignorance this is more a case of employee being trained to lie to the customer to save cost to employer of splitter install.

Don't know why they aren't honest and just say 'yes a filter may improve the situation especially as you have an old house, many jackpoints, and an alarm, however the household wiring is your responsibility'.

+1 As above.

Slingshot are being "unhelpful", to put it politely.  wink

To the OP:  You have three options - which may be influenced by your existing contract (if any) with Slingshot:

  • Stay with Slingshot and put up with a very poor VDSL connection.
  • Stay with Slingshot and pay for a proper master filter install yourself (this includes a master filter AND new dedicated household wiring to your preferred "VDSL" location)
  • Change to another ISP that does provide a proper master filter as standard

Personally I would go for the third option.

I still have most of a 12 month ADSL contract to go with them so not an option to change.

DLM has just moved me to fast path, which has reduced my ping time back to 9ms like i had on ADSL :)   and also reduced my sync speed to 13MBdown/1up like i used to have on ADSL :(

So it seems all the speed gain was from interleaving.  Not much point staying on VDSL in this situation.
