We managed to work out the cause of the problem. It was the Windows 10 Anniversary update coming down to our laptops. We had setup Windows 10 to send updates to PCs on my local network thinking that it would download once and then distribute to other computers on the network. It turns out we were totally bogged down and we have had to turn off this option. It is a shame as given we are on a very slow link this option had it worked would be ideal for us.

I have yet to do a serious test case of the distrubuted windows updates, However in my household where there is very limited windows 10 usage currently, there is few cases i see often

1. Windows update hammers the crap out of the connection, it commonly opens large thread counts to cache server a hop or so away so easily fills the pipe - Somewhat moot really.

2. When checking for updates windows update likes to upload who knows what, the transit method used is exceptionally unforgiving, even with my extreme setup - on a slower link, this obviously takes longer and is more apparent, Any adsl line will without doubt notice this however.

3. Updates peg out network interfaces sharing updates between, Blistering fast when it works! - Unfortunately consistency of this working is limited. - Running the same editions of windows 10 will likely help here though...

I wonder if you would benefit from a squid cache/web proxy. It might save you downloading the same files more than once. Esp with updates to multiple computers etc.

squid doesnt do that well with windows updates.

i used to run it behind mine, honestly was more trouble than it was worth.. Although i did run on slightly excessive settings...

Actually found it was a little worse in some cases, as it is a second point of issue to deal with the TCP session (tcp acks, if the session should stop etc)

ive had the anniversary update come down to one computer on my network and the other 2 came locally via my LAN. i was watching the networl stats as it was happening, i was impressed.
