We have recently switched to Slingshot and have been experiencing internet performance issues. We live well past the max distance that ADSL is supposed to work, however it was been working for the last 9 years.  In the past when switching providers we have had to get them to change interleaving as we kept dropping out of the network.  Slingshot have said they have checked this and to be honest it's not dropouts this time.

The internet has been going really slow to the point where pinging Slingshot takes 188ms and the download speed test reached a whole 0.6mb...on  a good day this is around 3mb (used to be around 7 a year or two back cry ).

I have noticed that we are getting a lot of rx CRC errs but no tx CRC errs - since rebooting an hour ago we have had 5463 RX CRC errs.

We have spoken to slingshot on numerous occasions and they have said that they have tested and there are no errors.

The router is connected to a dedicated jack - I had this done so we did not need to use filters and the alarm could work when we built the house 4 years ago.

I have put another router on the network and replaced the cable between the wall socket and router.  It gets exactly the same issues.

If we could have switched to a better network we would have but we are in a dead spot when it comes to service options.

If you live past max length of ADSL reach then look into RBI

What about the rest of these? Sync is the most important.

Given your distance you may be better off running at ADSL1 mode.

Given that your negotiating at ADSL2, does not sound like a conklin situation so my next goto for your latency and downstream issues is upstream saturation.

Try testing without any other devices on the network - Remember icloud sync etc.

My pick is you're saturating your upstream as well.

Which ADSL 1 mode do you suggest I set the modem to.  I can choose from:

  • T1.413
  • G.Lite
  • G.DMT

Have a play around, Totally depends on what suites your line.

Changing linemode will not help your saturation issue however, infact it could be worse if you switch to a 64/128kbit upstream profile.

We are currently working okay...I am going to wait until we have the next big slowdown and then connect one laptop with nothing running on it directly to the router and nothing else going thru the router.  I will then see what happens.  Thank you everyone for your assistance and I will get back to you with the results.

We have not seen the return of the speed issues we were having last week as yet...so have not been able to do the further testing I was going to do as yet.

RBI:

I tested the Vodafone RBI about 4 months ago and it kept dropping out.  The coverage maps at that time showed that we could not get Spark RBI and that we were on the very edge of the Vodafone RBI coverage.

My neighbor has Vodafone RBI and he says it is not uncommon to drop back to 3g.  We tested it again here yesterday with his router and we were managing to stay on 4g for the test period of around an hour.  We saw max download speeds of around 20mb (low of 16mb) and upload of around 8mb using speedtest.net.  It is also interesting that Vodafone put a flyer in our letterbox in the last few days announcing that we could now get reliable rural broadband here.

I went onto the Spark website and they too say we can get RBI....which is a change from when I last looked.  When I last looked we were outside of coverage range.  I have no way of testing this...we would have to signup to test it.  I find this frustrating especially when Vodafone have test units available.

We have the added problem of needing a landline for the alarm.  I tried finding a solution for this but currently there is nothing that is suitable with our alarm system.  This makes any RBI solution very expensive for us.

im sure if you actually got external aerials for the RBI (3/4G) you wouldn't have too many issues with performance
