I'm sorry, but as someone who works in the field.. I'm still rather shocked you would advise that.

I agree, if someone is not technically able, they should not tinker within the ETP absolutely. All for consumers doing their testing before adding a callout to chorus, but advising the customer to potentially damage their device.

In the case that changing of the cable does work, ofcourse they are going to be happy and not continue through with resolving the actual issue at hand. That is quite simply bandaiding a fault.

Realistically the Yellow RJ45 cable that comes with the Fritz should be used, as realistically every DSL connection should be properly filtered and terminating that connection is by code meant to be a RJ45 Jack.

End of the day, in the long run at the end of the day... the Cost of the callout is generally cheaper than the Fritz and if the installation was done correct in the first place a callout wouldnt be required at all to get the connection working.

Something like this I have no issue with advising to use a plug that really will not cause damage to the main pins of the Fritz, yes the RJ11/12 can damage the outside pins (2&6 especially), look at all the damaged patch panels where RJ plugs have been used for POTS or DSL and then someone wants to make it a "data" port, outside pins pretty well flat. I won't advise anyone who doesn't know what's in an ETP to "have a go", different vocations will bring different advice to their level and experience at hand, mine has been 22 years working on the network, I've seen all sorts of damaged pins and all sorts of "give it a go" jobs.

Yes it would be great to have an install go first time, unfortunately 2Degrees have stuck with the DIY installs instead of the RJ45 with splitter install.

Thank you guys!

I didn't open up the ETP, as I do realise it's beyond my knowledge/capabilities in this area.

I did try using a previously working 'wall jack to DSL' cable, but it didn't lead to any changes. I also tried all wall jacks, all didn't work.

Looks like I will have to wait and see what Chorus does.

I guess if Chorus suggests an expensive workaround, I can discuss with them about switching back to plain old ADSL, is that right? After all, I just need a temporary solution.

Thanks all for your advice!

Dear all,

Chorus fixed the problem without dropping by the property.

I suspect it must therefore be a problem external to our property then?

Thanks for all your help and advice so far :)

Excellent!  You now have working VDSL connection, but without a master filter.  smile

How well does it work?

Could you post your VDSL line stats (from your modem) and some speed tests (via ethernet, not wifi)?

Geeks like to know this stuff.  wink

Sounds like a loose joint was fixed, which is very much what it looked to be a possibility of if not internal wiring.

Glad to hear your problems are resolved :)

Hi All,

Thanks again!

Sorry for the long wait, I was away from home so only managed to get these line stats. Complaint from wife is to do with very poor internet speeds, we definitely had difficulty with FaceTime while away.

There is definitely something wrong here. I will definitely let 2degrees know. Is there anything else that you would suggest (apart from installing a Master Filter)?

GoodSync. Easily back up and sync your files with GoodSync. Simple and secure file backup and synchronisation software will ensure that your files are never lost (affiliate link).

i am surprised you can do anything with the 76kbit upstream.

looks like you have a horrible line that does have some sort of issue on it.

a master filter will ensure you have good quality wiring inside you house, and eliminate any issues there, after that if the connection is still bad there is not much more you can do. Probably get a better connection on ADSL

+1

As above

You have a very high downstream attenuation of 34db - more that twice the recommended maximum for VDSL

This is because either:

1. you have a very long line length to your house &/or

2. your internal house wiring is poor

You can do nothing about line length, but a master filter (with suitable rewiring) could improve your house wiring.

Get a master filter installed. This should improve VDSL and ADSL performance.

As stated above, you may be better off going back to ADSL.

and at the end of the day if you install a master filter and it doesnt really help your VDSL performance, it will likely benefit your ADSL performance a little. so you cant really loose

The distance drop off there, i would highly recommend rolling adsl rather than vdsl.

As others have said, a filter installation would be wise. Clean up the line a tad.

I'm amazed you are synced so low on the upstream with US0.. makes me wonder if your line itself isnt using US0 (post spectrum from IE it will show the green part aswell as the blue)

Try all the sockets again and see if one of them gives much better results. You might be forcing DSL thru a filter, since they are not perfect devices on a really short line you may find that you get some sync going thru one.
