Yes, Orcon should make it more clear on their site, They should add a note where you select the the data blocks

You would have to ring up and ask to find this out, However they did tell me this when i changed plans to Purple, and i called again just now to check, its definiatly 80 cents per additonal GB for me on Purple with Calling + 50 GB Addon.

Interesting how they unbundle the exchange in Takapuna/Glenfield yet Forrest Hill/Milford area is not being included.

Forrest Hill/Milford is actually served by a different exchange (i.e. not Takapuna or Glenfield)

There seems to be some confusion around the data add ons. I will attempt to get this cleared up on the site (and it sounds like we have a training issue if you talked to someone on the phone dan).

To clarify:
  • Additional data (over your plan allowance) is charged at $1 per GB for anyone on an Orcon@Home+ plan (LLU) e.g. someone on Orcon@Home Gold+ with a 25GB data add would have a total allowance of 35GB (base package comes with 10GB + 25GB add on). If this person used 37GB in one month they would be charged $2 extra (2GB x $1).
  • Additional data (over your plan allowance) is charged at $2 per GB for anyone on an Orcon@Home plan (non-LLU) e.g. someone on Orcon@Home Gold with a 25GB data add would have a total allowance of 35GB (base package comes with 10GB + 25GB add on). If this person used 37GB in one month they would be charged $4 extra (2GB x $2).
  • There are a range of data add ons (that are different for + plans vs non + plans) available. These are clearly shown on the Orcon site.
I hope that this clears things up. Apologies for any confusion.

Maybe I wasnt clear enough, you unbundle Takapuna, Glenfield and Browns Bay and then for some strange reason skip out the Forrest Hill exchange.

Any idea when Glen Eden may come up. I have had enough with the slow speed on GoLarge.

Sorry for the slow reply guys.

Glen Eden and Forrest Hill are both likely to be Q3 this year (August/September). Note that this is indicitive only, as we rely on Chorus 'opening up' exchanges for us to be able to install our equipment.

Keep an eye on the Orcon site because we will be updating the future plans as they become more certain.

Here's another question for Duncan:

I am looking seriously at switching to Orcon's LLU service when the Blockhouse Bay exchange is unbundled later this month.

However, I am seeing a lot of comments about Orcon's very poor International Speeds during evening peak hours.  For example in this thread:

http://www.gpforums.co.nz/showthread.php?s=&threadid=312206&perpage=25&pagenumber=3

Both of my sons use Ventrilo and from what a lot of Orcon users are saying, it keeps disconnecting during peak hours.  There doesn't seem any reason to throttle Ventrilo as it is a VoIP application and uses minimal bandwidth compared to Bit Torrents.

The interesting thing is that with our current Xnet connection, Ventrilo works fine even though the performance of most other things such as YouTube is total rubbish.

If we change providers, we don't want to trade one set of problems for another.  However, going by the comments in the above thread as well as this one:

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?ForumId=82&TopicId=21618

that is exactly what we would be doing.

Can you please provide some explanation of why these problems are occurring as well as what is being done to rectify them.

Thank you.

@grant_k

I'm on Orcon (not LLU) and are a frustrated user of Ventrilo (in Aussie). My traceroutes show 100% packet within the Aussie's Telstra hops. I can only assume that packets from NZ carry entirely no weight anywhere in the world. I don't believe it has anything to do with throttling.
Gameareana (among most others) servers are mostly unplayable to excessive latency. All the latency comes from a single hop into the Aussie network. It was never explained who has control this, so Orcon didn't do themselves any favours. Conjecture reins and the issues mostly remains.

I would love to know why those of us who are never going to be in the Orcon+network have to pay more money for less bandwidth, slower conections, and a higher premium on additional data.

Exchanging $10 for 5gig block for $2/gig. That is some amazing maths.

The bundles represent rubbish economy. Especially the non-LLU. Encouraging people to swap?.... Hey when you can't,  that is just plain pisses you off.

It appears that the real issues of actually laying fibre or new copper has not been addressed. ADSL connections remain unperforming and ADSL2 is a pitiful measure to push the lines a little further. Mostly (from reading) to sub ADSL speeds. People have lowered the bar so much that they are happy with 1.5mbit from their suburban home with the exchange just down the road.
That was supposed to run a max of 8mbit. Now where have a max of 24mbit and we should be over the moon if you get 4mbit. That is dimishing returns.
Perhaps by ADSL3+ we will see 6mbit.

Sure - it is no mean task to upgrade the actual exchange to home link but it is what needs to happen. NZ is so not in the forfront of telcomms.

Hi guys,

I will look into the Ventrilo issue and come back to you. Will need to have a chat to the techs to see what is happening there. We are definitely not throttling it.

Re: international speeds, some customers are currently experiencing slower than normal speeds (as per our system status page). Our techs are looking into it and we expect to have it resolved by the end of this week.

Re: Hamilton roll-out - we have no ETA for Hamilton at this stage. Keep an eye on the website, but unlikely to be before mid-2009.

Re: Data charges on LLU vs non-LLU - this is simple economics. We have made no secret of the fact that the cost of providing service to customers on our own network is lower than those on Telecom Wholesale products. I am sure that those customers making the move on to our network would be dissapointed if we did not pass those savings on to them. While we would love to provide the same deal to all customers regardless of where they live we are simply not able to do so. I have had good feedback from customers changing the charging from $10/5GB to $2/1GB, as it has lowered peoples total broadband cost.
