Just saw a jump of about 400Kbps up and 4Mbps down by removing an extension cord from the equation and plugging the modem directly to the wall and switching my PC to wireless. The attenuation has also dropped 3 points. Equating that in, would that increase your estimate?

Never ever use the flat wire type extension leads.

These are known to cause slow speeds and attenuate the signals.

The increase in speed by removing the extension is a practical demonstration of the speed degrading effects of degraded and inferior wiring.

To answer the question of how much a master filter will improve your speed depends on how much the existing wiring in the house is impinging upon the VDSL signal - this could range from hardly at all, to heaps, and so the only real way to tell is to try - a bit of a chicken and egg scenario.

If you have multiple jack-points in the house then a master filter isolates and blocks the speed stealing effects of this additional wiring. If you are up to experimenting and can't justify the cost vs (unknown) speed gain of a master filter just yet, you could move your modem to the first jack-point in the house that the street wring comes to, and temporarily disconnect the down stream jack-points. Often the first or master jack-point it is identifiable by having thick black outdoor wiring going into it (but not in 100% of cases), where as the other secondary jack-points will often have light weight white indoor wiring going in and out of them. This experiment will approximate the speed increase you can expect to see with a master filter. If you do not use the other phone jack-points you could leave them disconnected - just remember to reconnect when you move out, otherwise your landlord might get grumpy and pay for reconnection out of your bond money. I did this at my parents house (a 70's vintage house) and saw about a 400 kbps rise in ADSL upload speed, and about 2mbps down speed which made me comfortable to go ahead with the master filter install. They don't have VDSL just yet sorry.

Quick update: I was reading about putting on a filtered faceplate here http://www.increasebroadbandspeed.co.uk/adsl-faceplate

When I went to check if I had the test socket it mentioned, I didn't find one but there was a lot of dirt and dust. Upon opening it, doing nothing and reassembling it, my attenuation has gone up by .5db

Is there an alarm (old or currently in use) or any other devices wired into the phone line? ie - is there more than one cable coming into this jack point when you whip off the face-plate?

If not, and if the only jack point is close to where the wiring enters the house then is it unlikely that a master filter will improve your speeds a huge amount.

Master filters pay the biggest dividends when there are multiple jack points or when there are devices like monitored alarms in the circuit.

Well, my upstream SNR margin has dropped to 6 and im at 2.2mbps. downstream snr has gone up to 12 and speed is back down to 15mbps. I'm not bothered by that downstream speed, but I'd still like more upstream. at least its decentish right now

6dB is as low as it will go.

this is ddDLM doing its job in trying to find a balance in stability and speed for you.

Removing things like that extension lead will allow ddDLM to be more willing to make changes to benefit you.

Any improvements to your signal are always beneficial.

Can't always insure it will be in speed, sometimes this is just in errors (however with ddDLM error rate decreasing is a trigger for improved Speed)
