Just got set up with Orcon VDSL today because the 1.7 Mbps upload I was getting from Slingshot wasn't enough for my needs.

I now have 1Mbps upload speed.

Strangely, the testing site thinks I'm in Auckland when I'm in Wellington and I get a lower ping when connecting to an Auckland server than Wellington servers.

whatismyipaddress.com also said I was in Auckland until I clicked the allow the site to see my location prompt (which doesn't show up on speedtest)

https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=82&topicid=141269 found this thread and it sounds like I'm too far away from the exchange. Even if I can get the speeds they're complaining about I'd be sufficiently happy

People also mention in that thread something called a master splitter should be installed for VDSL. No technician from any ISP has come and done anything at my flat since I signed up to Slingshot ADSL in 2014. Orcon said when setting me up, they would do everything remotely. So I'm under the assumption I do not have this master splitter?

Edit: Just compared my download speeds on the Battle.net app and I'm getting about the same there as I did on Slingshot if that's at all relevant

Too far from exchange, that simple.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

I don't know what that means

Annex M is a standard unsupported on chorus gear, but is on UCLL (slingshot) gear.

It increases upstream speed at the loss of Downstream.

For a longer line, Annex M will net a faster upstream speed than VDSL. VDSL betters in 99% of cases though.

So I should've tried Slingshot VDSL?

When I looked at their plans they were offering VDSL at the same price as Orcon but only for new customers and Orcon was offering 3 months free

Would the master splitter if I had one help?

I'm also wondering how the OP in the thread I linked got significantly faster upload than me when theres only about 40 difference in attenuation

Hi there,

PM me with your account details and I'll take a look and see how far away from the exchange/cabinet you are.

Also bear in mind that DLM (Dynamic Line Management) will be in play during the first 10 or so days of your connection - which means your speeds will fluctuate a bit until the best profile is determined for your line.

Additional information if it's helpful.

My flat is quite old and wasn't even designed with a shower in mind. The phoneline jack also looks like it was installed sometime after the flat was built

The Slingshot technician who set me up in 2014 didn't do anything inside the flat

An in-line filter will definitely increase your speeds, but probably not to a degree that would make a large enough difference for the cost involved (an electrician or ISP tech will charge approx $150 for this sort of thing, more if chorus is tasked to do it for them)

As above, definitely sounds like your property is marginal for VDSL (too far from the cabinet)

That's not quite right, in the early days of VDSL it was highly recommended to broadband providers and customers that getting a master filter installed was the best option for a smooth service experience. Around December 2015, a band plan change from 997 to 998ADE dramatically increased stability across the network, with average downstream rates reaching around 50mbps. We still advise connection only works best for orders that are naked (e.g. no associated voice service), but all install options are still there for broadband providers and their customers to chose from .^mike

Too true, sorry, my wording wasn't quite right. However the $150 approx install cost still remains either way, I was trying to make the point that most providers no longer offer this as an initial option to reduce on-boarding costs.

Nope, Slingshot VDSL would be the same as Orcon VDSL because they are all from from Chorus DSLAM.

Your Slingshot ADSL would've been on their own DSLAM hence they can do that special upload speed for you. Might want to switch back if you can't fix this.

The chorus website says feb 2018 and theres holes being dug up by my driveway right now so possibly sooner by the looks.

I'm considering the cost to get my wiring looked at and a master splitter installed. If I can get decent upload speed for content making and livestreaming without fibre then I see no point in waiting for fibre.

Based on personal experience I'd say you're looking at an increase to a maximum of 30Mbps Down and 3Mbps Up with a Master filter installed based on what your existing stats show. (that's being quite generous too)

Definitely go to fibre when it's available for you, you'll never look back!
