My alarm company said either they had shut down some parts early or there was a problem. I know my alarm can't communicate with the monitoring center reliably over cell, but falls back to wired network.

Do I have to get a specific kind of SIM for the alarm? The one in there now is just a standard 2degrees SIM I bought myself and put in a few years ago. I was surprised it was only 2G.

Sounds like your alarm company is better placed to answer that. I would try your alarm SIM in another device (if it fits) and if you find it works (3G/4G) then presumably your alarm is 2G only so you will have to get a Vodafone SIM.

@timmmay are you joking? Spark have never had a 2G network since the XT network was built

Aredwood: Dang, I missed the party. Tried switching my phone to 2g only. It showed full signal strength (I have LOS to a 2degrees tower) But my phone can't connect to it.

Presumably my local tower is still transmitting 2G signals, but the upstream controllers have been switched off. And guessing someone will visit the tower tomorrow to unplug the 2G equipment.

unlikely someone will visit the site tomorrow do you know how many hundreds of sites there are? It will ge done within the coming weeks/months.

I have no idea what the alarm needs, if it's 2G only. The alarm company replaced the comms module recently so I should ask them. I have to say I'm not impressed with Safegard at the moment and may just cancel my monitoring, the neighbor is usually home anyway so would let us know if it went off.

My last phone was a dual sim, the secondary slot was 2G. I guess I would just switch the two around. I had 2Degrees and Vodafone. Vodafone still works in 2G. I've found generally not all places 2D have roaming agreements like Wellington Makara and Owhiro Bay, so Vodafone still have a bit better reception. But these are not the areas most people are in.

Edit. We don't have any 2G handsets now. We did have a Nokia 6310 but we didn't use it so long that the battery died or the phone died cos the phone wouldn't even turn on with the power charger. Our $5 phones lying around here are 3G. Yeah one could switch their phones to 2G mode? If that is available and rescan.
