@aredwood yes, data still works on 3G no problem - just gave it a try.

3G 900mhz support?

If you are in an urban area at the moment. You might be getting coverage on other bands. But rural coverage will be terrible without 3G 900mhz.

I'm reasonably rural at the moment - putting the phone into test mode shows it's switching between 'H" and "H+" but doesn't show the freq of the bands. GSM Arena says that the handset will support 3G @ 900MHz.

I don't know about Android but I know there is a setting in iOS to disable data use when roaming which could be on by default

I did check that - android has it too, rather ominious warning about costs when you turn it on. But it's on, and doesn't seem to make a difference unfortunately.

Have you tried your SIM card in a different phone?

And I'm assuming that you have checked your phones exact model number for 3G 900mhz support?

As even very common phones like the Samsung Galaxy S8, still have different sub models, that support different bands.

@aredwood No and Yes.

I used to be able to drive from Waiouru to Wellington via either route streaming spotify with this handset. Now, whenever I roam, the streaming stops.

The only thing I can see that is different is the introduction of Data Clock, which I know won't work when roaming so I don't use when driving. Otherwise, same handset, sim etc.

I have to make the trip again today. I'll try de-registering from data clock and enabling casual data again to see if that makes a difference.

De-registered the handset from the data clock, restarted and then was able to use some data while roaming with no issues.
Re-registered for data clock and the handset is now working, able to use data both roaming and not.

Thanks very much to all who took the time to help.
