thanks for all the reply above.

I just simiply follow what the new ISP sales told me.

they told me to contact slingshot after I switched to them.

I should NOT listen to them.

30 days ago, I should cancel my slingshot services one day after the switching day.

now I am paying 2 broandbands now for this month and hope nobody will NOT fall into the same trap as mine.

my new ISP expicility asked me to call slingshot after I switched.

but it is a trap.

It's not a trap. You simply needed to request that your new ISP sign you up on X date 30 or so days in the future, then ask your current ISP to disconnect you on that day, or a day after to be as safe as possible.

But as you have found out it's too late now in this case....

my new ISP told me to call slingshot after I actually switched. so I just follow...but find out I should not listen to them.

So your issue is with your new RSP then for giving you that advice. Slingshot have done nothing wrong.

I think that the time to object to the 30 days for cancellation would have been when you signed up with them agreeing to it in the first place...

30 days is the norm with pretty much every RSP in NZ. I have no idea who your new RSP is but I'm assuming based on this comment you haven't read the terms & conditions of their contract as it'll probably have a 30 day clause in it as well.

I don't know that you can have any complaint if you didn't read (or skim) the T&Cs before signing to be fair... If nothing else I would have expected you to check those same T&Cs to see what you agreed to before complaining publically about it...

It probably sounds harsh - but when you signed the agreement with them, you agreed to their t&c's ... Not reading them isn't the problem of the provider.

This is normal for broadband connections.  You will find that your new service provider is the same.

to all my friends above, I know 30 days notice for cancellation is standard to all ISPs.

but it is common to all ISPs that does not mean it is fair.

why ISPs took 30 day to cancel our services but only 5 days to activate?

that means it is harder for consumers  leaving them than joining.

I dont think technically cancelling services is harder than adding new users.

There are conditions to remember, for example.. your rsps agreement with chorus is monthly regardless of how long you were actually using the connection.

The only time this is made hard is when, cancels are done in the wrong way.

i do agree, that it's not intuitive to leave a RSP. It's kinda a catch-22 though..

I'm sure it's not any harder but it's good for business as it reduces churn and it is absolutely within their rights to include it in their terms and conditions.

Ever noticed that you can add Sky Channels online but you can't remove them.... same reason.  Oh and Sky's cancellation period is 30 days too.

Is it fair? Yes as it prevents ISP's from making a loss from Chorus / your LFP.
Is it easy to get around? Yes.

Set up a connection date on the new ISP with 30 days leadtime. Tell your existing ISP you're moving away in 31 days but tell them to not disconnect and you're letting them know only.

Churn goes through 30 days from when you signed up - you only ever paid for 1 ISP during this time. Logic.

I recently did just this moving from BigPipe to 2degrees. Didn't get another bill from BigPipe after this.

It is only unfair to you since you didn't do your research and have now been stung. Case closed, move on.

I am going to do exactly what you just did.

But the sales lady in new ISP asked me not to.

So I am set up.....
