I switched my broadband services to another ISP two weeks before my slingshot billing cycyle.

then I called slingshot today to cancel my broadband service but I have been told that it will take 30 days to cancel my services.

here is the wording

"Please note that as per our terms and conditions, we do require 30 days notice for cancellation requests. We recommend cancelling at least 5 working days before your bill date to avoid further service rental charges. "

as I already switched to another ISP, that means I am paying two broandband services for this month.

:(

according to slingshot site, it only took 5 days to activate account.

https://help.slingshot.co.nz/hc/en-us/articles/360000054054-Fibre-Frequently-Asked-Questions

but it will take them 30 days to be cancelled?

better to be paying for 2 services and having a working connection than paying for 1 and potentially having no connection.

Do not call your ISP until your connection is active on the new ISP

That is very standard, and is in their terms and conditions. You will find most ISPs are the same with the cancellation time.

Unfortunately you really don't have a leg to stand on with this and Slingshot have no obligation to help you out in this case.

That is a very helpful post for future reference.

There are literally hundreds of threads on here from people who don't bother to check their RSP contracts nor follow the proper steps to churn your connection.

Most RSP's have a 30 day clause in their contracts. This is normal. It's in your contact so you need to pay it.

If you sign up for a new provider and do things the way you did you're going to have to pay for both for a month.

There are plenty of posts online indicating how to avoid this by changing providers using the correct process.

John

thanks John.

that is exactlly what my NEW ISP told me so I switched my broadband to new ISP  last Friday.

and also called slingshot this Monday, and they finally came back to me today saying I have to give them 30 days notice.

so

in another word, no matter what, you will need to pay 2 ISPs for a month if you are switching?

Not if you request your new ISP's connection date to be over 30 days in the future, then contact your current ISP and request the cancellation of you service AFTER you have ordered your new service. Read the link in my earlier post, it's tongue in cheek but actually explains everything very well.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

No, not if you follow recommended processes.

There are plenty of posts on here detailing that, I don't have time to find one and copy and paste right now but there literally are hundreds of threads discusing this very same issue.

do you want an internet connection? if so pay for 2 for a month, small price to pay

if you dont mind it potentially getting cut off or delayed and loosing the connection, book a date to finish with one and start with the other.

id rather pay for an extra 30 days than have no internet

the sales from new ISP told me to swtiched first then contact previous ISP for cancelling.

if that is the standard, so everyone will pay 2 ISPs for a whole month if switching?

smart way will be disconnect your previous broadband next day after you already switched to new ISP.

that needs 30 days of plannning ahead.

It's not a trap. You simply needed to request that your new ISP sign you up on X date 30 or so days in the future, then ask your current ISP to disconnect you on that day, or a day after to be as safe as possible.

But as you have found out it's too late now in this case....
