How do you find out which exchange you are on? I'm in Albany which isn't to far away from Birkenhead

You will be off one of the local Albany exchanges (Probably Albany). The UFB OLT coverage areas are quite small.

I am in Birkdale and I am not covered by Birkenhead :-(

Yea but there is a difference between starting a discussion and being obnoxious for no reason.

How is asking why you want to be part of the trial or if you have the equipment to actually use 10Gbps obnoxious? I personally think these are valid questions for this discussion.

So out of interest, how do you intend to test 10Gbps?

The first guy that responded automatically assumed I wouldn't have any use for it. Seems a bit rude. Maybe im just excited to try out the latest tech. I shouldn't need to justify myself. Next time I wont even bother asking here.

Actually nobody was being obnoxious. There is some misconception going around about 10Gbit from what I've seen and I'm being fully honest when asking these questions. Sure, it'll be nice to have but for the home user Gigabit is too much as it is. Your computer won't be able to fully support it also and you won't actually get any benefit from moving to it either.

There are many threads on Geekzone about people not getting Gigabit speeds which is either caused by them using WiFi or their equipment. It isn't just a little consumer off the shelf router to achieve 10 Gigabit, we're talking about in most cases a router like the Edgerouter Infinity (link) to do this along with the right cabling and other equipment. It is a serious investment for both the ISP and the Customer to provision somebody on the trial and the ISP / Chorus have to be sure your network and equipment is fully compatible with this.

This sort of speed isn't going to make your games go faster or in most cases won't even make your Steam games download any quicker either as there are bottlenecks further upstream and locally. The most intense internet user likely won't be able to utilise a Gigabit plan and even if they did they'll like have their ISP asking them to slow down a bit as this is a tonne of data. Since you stated you're using your ISP's provided router I honestly don't think you're up for the trial - gotta be blunt here.

But as a positive - isn't it great there is such a discussion about 10Gbit when Australia are struggling to do 100Mbit right?

Not sure how you take offence to someone indicating a top of the line service might not be of any use to you, if you wanted a car to go to the supermarket in and I suggest an 18 wheel flat bed truck it might be suggested that "You would have no use for it". Now you wouldn't go getting upset over that. 10Gb/s internet is like going to the supermarket to get milk in a truck like this:

My analogy is also way way understated, it would need to have about 50 trailers to be in portion.

This is not a customer service forum either so expect people's personal blunt opinions.. At the end of the day no one here is going to attack you because of your thoughts or wants or needs. Maybe some are blunt, that is quite a comment trait with tech minded people. Thicken the skin :)

Because the equipment would cost a lot more, I've have less choice about what to use, it would likely be less reliable, I'd have to fill out feedback, it would provide zero benefit to me (or any home user)... That's off the top of my head.

At the time of writing that I was thinking to myself more at a time its publicly available much at the time of gig being released every man and his dog was jumping on it, not that they needed it they just wanted it

Supporting equipment was referring to people who already have 10gb networking (myself) or are happy to invest in it because that's what they want

you can go 10gb at home starting around $400~ NZD (1 computer and 1 server) these days which keeps a computer hobbiest like me happy.. its far from bleeding edge but still gives that tickle most are looking for

Thats your internal network. You will also need a 10Gb capable router which you won't be getting from your local Noel Leeming etc. and will likely be prohibitively expensive and more complex to configure as it will be enterprise grade.

Im personally running a pfsense router so wouldn't be that much of a big deal for me to buy another 10gb nic to connect the router into my switch.. thats of course if its all possible..
